SFGATE SCREENS: Village of the Damned (1995) @ 7:30 PM

Presented by SFGATE SCREENS, a movie series hosted by award-winning writer and editor Amanda Bartlett. This October, we take a little trip up to Marin County…

Beware the children! In the fall of 1994, one of the most cursed Hollywood productions to film in the Bay Area took over the idyllic towns of Inverness, Point Reyes Station and Nicosio for an unforgettable two-month-long shoot. We’ll talk about the Universal monster movie director John Carpenter originally wanted to make in his backyard just over a decade after filming “The Fog,” and the not-so-warm welcome the cast and crew got from locals. Learn about the village it took to make this horror movie happen, why the ill-fated timing of the film's release made it a box office flop, and how it became a cult favorite that resonates with other creepy kid movies today like “Weapons.”

“From the master of suspense, John Carpenter, comes a chilling new version of the sci-fi classic. Something is terribly wrong in the tiny village of Midwich. After an unseen force invades a quiet coastal town, ten women mysteriously find themselves pregnant. Local physician Dr. Alan Chaffee (Christopher Reeve) and government scientist Dr. Susan Verner (Kirstie Alley) join forces when the women simultaneously give birth... and the reign of supernatural terror begins. In what The New York Times calls "one scarifying trip," the people of Midwich must try to find a way to stop the unstoppable in the Village of the Damned.” (Shout)
