On the last day of World War II in a small town somewhere in Poland, Polish exiles of war and the occupying Soviet forces confront the beginning of a new day and a new Poland. In this incendiary environment we find Home Army soldier Maciek Chelmicki, who has been ordered to assassinate an incoming commissar. But a mistake stalls his progress and leads him to Krystyna, a beautiful barmaid who gives him a glimpse of what his life could be. MOViES FOR MANiACS 35MM Double Bill: Tilt & Joysticks

Hosted by Jesse Hawthorne Ficks of MOViES FOR MANiACS, emphasizing dismissed, underrated and forgotten films for over 23 years

7:00pm - TiLT (1979)

A 13-year-old Brooke Shields plays a precocious pre-teen, pinball wizard who runs away from her crummy Texan home and hitch-hikes across America with the hopes to compete at a premiere pinball tournament in Santa Cruz. CA. This unfairly overlooked and extremely obscure coming-of-age film taps into similar "mature kids cinema" territory such as Rich Kids (1979), Little Darlings (1980) and Foxes (1980). Writer/director Rudy Durand delivers a remarkable time-capsule of late-1970s pinball madness along with the always hilarious Charles Durning, who steals the show as the ultimate pinball wizard named "The Whale". Throw in an addictively memorable soundtrack and "pinball-istic" cinematography by Richard H. Kline (who shot the original Star Trek feature the same year), and you've got yourself a 35mm screening that you won't want to have missed. Not available streaming nor has it ever been released on any round disc (DVD, Bluray or 4K.) Rights courtesy of WB. Rare 35mm print. Preceded by 35mm trailers. 111 minutes. Rated PG.

+ 9:15pm JOYSTiCKS (1983)

Writer/Director Greydon Clark concocted one of the greatest video game-craze movies of the 1980s by compiling valley girls, punks, nerds, slobs, hippies, boobies and Joe Don Baker all into the most "totally awesome video arcade" ever put to film. Not to mention the legendary punk gang named The Vidiots, led by the almighty Jonathan (Uncle Rico) Gries! Greydon Clark is one of the great B-movie directors of all time. Come on out and help save the arcade from being closed down by the extremely relevant assortment of closed-minded townsfolk and play some video games while you're at it!  Preceded by a gaggle of classic T&A trailers along tons of trivia and giveaways . Rights courtesy of AGFA. RARE Original 35mm print! 88 minutes. Rated R.

** Special Note: Every attendee will receive a vintage MOViES FOR MANiACS zine**

$15 for one movie, $20 for double bill

The Big Heat @ 1:30 PM, 4:30 PM, & 7:30 PM

Noir doesn’t get any more hard-boiled than this scorching tale of vice and retribution, a film that finds director Fritz Lang working at the peak of his Hollywood style—stripped to the bone, simmering with outrage, and fatalistic to the core. A tightly wound Glenn Ford stars as a homicide detective whose investigation into a sprawling crime syndicate becomes a shockingly personal, hate-fueled quest for revenge. Costarring an iconic Gloria Grahame as the mink-coated gangster’s moll with her own axe to grind, and featuring a supporting cast led by a sensationally sleazy Lee Marvin, The Big Heat hits with raw, unstoppable force.

The Hills Have Eyes (Presented by Warped VHS) @ 7:30 PM

From the mind of Wes Craven, The Hills Have Eyes stands alongside the likes of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Night of the Living Dead as one of the defining moments in American indie horror.

Taking a detour whilst en route to L.A., the Carter family (featuring Dee Wallace of E.T. and The Howling) is in deep shit when their camper van breaks down in the middle of the desert -- and they find themselves at the mercy of monstrous cannibals lurking in the hills. With their lives under threat, the Carters are forced to fight back by any means necessary.

Horror master Craven achieved critical and commercial success with the likes of A Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream -- but for many genre fans, the director’s seminal ‘77 effort remains his masterpiece.

Andrei Rublev (Kyle's Styles) @ 7:30 PM

With his second feature, a towering epic that took him years to complete, Andrei Tarkovsky waded deep into the past and emerged with a visionary masterwork. Threading together several self-contained episodes, the filmmaker traces the renowned icon painter Andrei Rublev through the harsh realities of fifteenth-century Russian life, vividly conjuring the dark and otherworldly atmosphere of the age: a primitive hot-air balloon takes to the sky, snow falls inside an unfinished church, naked pagans celebrate the midsummer solstice, a young man oversees the casting of a gigantic bell. Appearing here in Tarkovsky’s preferred 183-minute cut, as well as the version that was originally censored by Soviet authorities, Andrei Rublev is an arresting meditation on art, faith, and endurance, and a powerful reflection on expressive constraints in the director’s own time.

Playing as part of Kyle’s Styles, a monthly program highlight a film selected by the Balboa’s own projectionist!

Three Colors: Blue @ 7:30 PM

Juliette Binoche gives a tour de force performance as Julie, a woman reeling from the tragic death of her husband and young daughter, in this first film from Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Three Colors trilogy. But Blue is more than just a blistering study of grief; it’s also a tale of liberation, as Julie attempts to free herself from the past while confronting truths about the life of her late husband, a composer. Shot in sapphire tones by Sławomir Idziak and set to an extraordinary operatic score by Zbigniew Preisner, Blue is an overwhelming sensory experience.

Creepshow (Presented on 35MM by 35 MilliMurder) @ 7:30 PM

Masters of the macabre – writer Stephen King and director George A. Romero – conjure up five shocking yarns, each a virtuoso exercise in the ghouls-and-gags style of classic '50s horror comics. A murdered man emerges from the grave for Father's Day cake. A meteor's ooze makes everything ... grow. A professor selects his wife as a snack for a crated creature. A scheming husband plants two lovers up to their necks in terror. A malevolent millionaire with an insect phobia becomes the prey of a cockroach army. Add the spirited performances of an excellent cast (Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Leslie Nielsen, Ted Danson, E.G. Marshall and King himself) and the ghoulish makeup wizardry of Tom Savini, and you have a non-stop, thrilling ride that "plays like an anthology of human phobias" (Roger Ebert)

Iris pairs legendary 87-year-old documentarian Albert Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even in Iris' dotage, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. Iris portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life's sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle-class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression. "I feel lucky to be working. If you're lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows."

The first Iranian film to win the Palme d’Or, this austere, emotionally complex drama by the great Abbas Kiarostami follows the enigmatic Mr. Badii (Homayoun Ershadi) as he drives around the hilly outskirts of Tehran looking for someone who will agree to bury him after he commits suicide, a taboo under Islam. Extended conversations with three passengers (a soldier, a seminarian, and a taxidermist) elicit different views on mortality and individual choice. Operating at once as a closely observed, realistic story and a fable populated by archetypal figures, Taste of Cherry challenges the viewer to consider what often goes unexamined in everyday life.

See More Hoffman: Happiness @ 4:30 PM

Playing as part of See More Hoffman, a two day celebration of one of the greatest actors of our generation!

As disturbingly funny as it is audaciously empathetic, auteur of unease Todd Solondz’s portrait of damaged souls reaching out for connection reveals the existential void underneath middle-class suburban “normalcy.” An extraordinary ensemble cast—including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jane Adams, Lara Flynn Boyle, Ben Gazzara, and Dylan Baker—embodies an array of loosely connected New Jersey deviants, depressives, and misfits, among them a frustrated phone-sex pest, an all-American dad concealing his pedophilic urges, and a lonely woman with a grisly secret, all of whom want just one thing: to be loved. One of the most controversial films of the 1990s, the unflinching Happiness unnerves precisely because it dares to see the humanity in those most often denied it.

Godzilla, its body burning, lays siege to Hong Kong. It's discovered that the King of the Monsters is on the verge of a meltdown. If Godzilla reaches a critical temperature, the resulting detonation will breach straight to the Earth's core and have a cataclysmic result. Meanwhile, a mysterious race of crustacean-like beings are spotted across Japan. Recent studies have been done on a process called Micro Oxygen, a method of increasing the size of something as a possible solution to help with food shortages. However, this new creature seems to have a more ancient history, being born from the Oxygen Destroyer itself that killed the original Godzilla in 1954.

SF Godzillafest: Terror of Mechagodzilla (SUB) @ 7:30 PM

In Godzilla’s last gasp of the Showa era, aliens retrieve Mechagodzilla’s remains and rebuild it with the aid of an unhinged biologist (a scenery-chewing Akihiko Hirata), in hopes of defeating Godzilla for possession of planet Earth. This film marked the return of director Ishiro Honda, who had retired years earlier, disheartened by the increasingly kid-friendly approach of the series. For this final entry, Honda steers the King of the Monsters back into grim territory, interweaving an alien-invasion plot with a tale of tragic romance.
