Nope ~ 7:30 PM

Oscar®-winning filmmaker Jordan Peele reimagines the summer movie with Nope, an expansive pop epic of uncanny science fiction. Following their father's shocking death, Hollywood animal wrangler OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and his sister Emerald (Keke Palmer) begin observing unexplained phenomena on their vast Southern California ranch that leads them down an obsessive rabbit hole as they plot attempts to capture the mystery on camera. Along with a former child star turned family theme park ringmaster (Steven Yeun) who neighbors the siblings, the pair's efforts to chase the spectacle soon bring terrifying consequences and unimaginable horror. The result is a complex social thriller that unpacks the seeds of violence, risk and opportunism that are inseparable from the romanticized history of the American West … and from show business itself.

Lodge Kerrigan began his succession of utterly unique, visually and aurally dazzling character studies with the raw, ravaging Clean, Shaven. A compelling headfirst dive into the mindscape of a schizophrenic (played by the remarkable Peter Greene) as he tries to track down his daughter after he is released from an institution, Kerrigan's film brilliantly uses sound and image to lead audiences into a terrifying subjectivity. No one is left unscathed.

Poetic Justice ~ 7:30 PM

Once upon a time in South Central LA . . . For his follow-up to Boyz n the Hood, John Singleton again turned the camera on his hometown to create a stirring exploration of grief, love, and creativity. Built around the electric chemistry between superstars Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur, the film follows two young Angelenos—Justice, a sensitive hairdresser and poet mourning the death of her boyfriend, and Lucky, a dashingly charismatic postal clerk—as they fall in love over the course of a liberating road trip. Featuring soul-nourishing poetry by Maya Angelou, and scene-stealing performances from Regina King and Joe Torry, Poetic Justice is one of the most irresistible romances of the 1990s.

Sparks fly both on and off the court in this groundbreaking feature debut by writer-director Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Old Guard), which elevated the coming-of-age romance by giving honest expression to the challenges female athletes face in a world that doesn’t see them as equal. Sanaa Lathan (Alien vs. Predator) and Omar Epps (Higher Learning) make for one of the most iconic screen couples of the 2000s as the basketball-obsessed next-door neighbors who find love over flirtatious pickup games, fall apart under the strain of high-pressure college hoops and families, and drift in and out of each other’s lives as they pursue their twin aspirations of playing professionally. Aided by stellar supporting performances and an eclectic R&B soundtrack, Love & Basketball captures the intoxicating passions, heartbreaking setbacks, and sky-high ambitions that mark a young woman’s journey to the top of her game and to lasting love.

A NIGHT WITH ALEX THOMAS AT THE BALBOA THEATRE

Actor/Comedian Alex Thomas was born in Los Angeles California. He grew up with a musical background. His mother a classical pianist and his father Alexander Sr. was a member of one of the greatest band in R&B history Earth Wind and Fire. He was the Class Clown from Kindergarten until he graduated the 12th grade.

Right after high school he landed his first job in the entertainment business on the hit comedy show In Living Color. I guess you can say Alex went from high school straight to the pros. Believe it or not he wasn’t hired as a comedian or an actor; but as a dance choreographer for the infamous Fly Girls. It was on the set of In Living Color where he met Keenan Ivory Wayans and Damon Wayans that he was persuaded by the family to pursue a career as a stand up comedian and the rest is history. Two years later Will Smith found Alex Thomas performing at the world famous Laugh Factory Comedy Club in Hollywood California. Smith hired Alex immediately as a writer on his hit sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air where he wrote for the show for three seasons. As a stand-up comedian Alex has starred in two 1- hour comedy specials “Straight Clownin’” (SHOWTIME) and “Alex Thomas Live” (BET). Alex has opened up for such stars as: Sinbad Jamie Foxx Mark Curry Damon Wayans and Bill Cosby. Stand-up comedy has lead Alex to many television and film roles. Alex played a sidekick role to Jamie Foxx on the hit sitcom The Jamie Foxx Show for three seasons. He has also guest starred on other hit sitcoms such as: Martin (Fox) Girlfriends (UPN) The Wayans Brothers (WB) Moesha (UPN) The Parkers (UPN) and All of US (UPN). Alex has also done several re-occurring character roles on hit animated series such as: Batman Beyond King of the Hill and Family Guy. Alex has also appeared on several talk shows including: The Best Damn Sports Show Period (FOX) Jay Leno (NBC) and Premium Blend (Comedy Central). In addition he has appeared in hit films such as: The Players Club Two Can Play That Game Just Married BAPS and The Wash to name a few. Alex is also well known in the hip-hop world from performing in several hit music videos and also several skits on Platinum-selling albums by artists such as: Kanye West P.Diddy Snoop Dogg 50 cent and Bow Wow.

Complementing his entertainment background Alex is also an avid 13-handicap golfer. He has played on some of the greatest courses in the world from Pebble Beach to St. Andrews. Golf has opened many doors for Alex as he has hosted and played in several celebrity golf tournaments including: Hall of Famers like: Magic Johnson Eric Dickerson and Tony Dorsett. Ferdinand, whom Marianne calls “Pierrot,” tries to find artistic fulfillment between bouts of criminal adventure, but keeps getting entangled in Marianne’s violent life.

About Nouvelles Femmes: Modern Women of the French New Wave and Their Enduring Contribution to Cinema

In Nouvelle Femmes Ericka Knudson examines the actresses and filmmakers who played a central role in one of the most innovative periods in film history. Moving beyond the myth of the male auteur, the book highlights how women of the French New Wave shaped modern cinema through performance, authorship, style, and cultural influence.

Through film analysis, archival material, and the women’s own words, Nouvelles Femmes offers a renewed perspective on figures such as Anna Karina, Jeanne Moreau, Jean Seberg, Brigitte Bardot, and Agnès Varda. Thoughtfully researched and accessible, the book underscores their lasting impact on cinematic language and representations of women on screen.

About the Author

Ericka Knudson holds a Ph.D. in Film Studies from Université Paris Ouest Nanterre, specializing in French New Wave cinema. Her new book, Nouvelles Femmes: Modern Women of the French New Wave and Their Enduring Contribution to Cinema, inspired a class that she is currently teaching at Stanford Continuing Studies. Patrick Eley started doing comedy in 2022 after moving from Chicago to Stockton, California in 2015 to chase his MMA dreams. Drawing on past lives as a chiropractor, equities trader, longshoreman, and martial artist, he delivers a dry, deadpan style that feels equal parts unhinged and grounded. He has opened for Shane Sydney Stigerts, Shane Gillis, Bruce Gray, and Steve Furey, and is currently featuring on James McCann’s U.S. tour.

Featuring Steve Ausburne

Steve Ausburne’s comedy career started with MC/Host work for friends with bands. His first attempt at actual stand up ended with a lifetime ban from a church in Grant’s Pass, Oregon.
Buoyed by that successful start, Steve has since embraced the stage as a place to present a spoken word memoir of all the embarrassing life moments that lurk in a place that only stand up or therapy sessions can reveal
Also, he is allergic to cats.
Steve peddles his comedic wares throughout Sonoma County and the San Francisco Bay Area.  He produces comedy shows throughout California's Wine Country and in addition to comedy performances, he is available for auctioneering, event hosting, work parties, voice acting, and private dancing.

With an international background, Jide brings a worldly (and sometimes otherworldly) perspective to the stage. Although based in the Bay Area, Jide has performed on many stages around the world, including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. A lover of laughter and mangoes, his sweet tooth is the perfect foil for his sharp tongue. Catch him light up the stage with his smooth & cheeky style.

Notebook on Cities and Clothes (Presented by Gallery 3630) ~ 7 PM

This “diary film,” as director Wim Wenders calls it, investigates the similarities of filmmaking craft to that of the Tokyo-based fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto, who, in the early 1980s, shocked and revolutionized the fashion world. Wenders shot the film mainly on his own, as a one-man crew. During the production, which stretched over a year, Yamamoto and Wenders became friends.

Days of Heaven ~ 1:30 PM, 4 PM & 7 PM

One-of-a-kind filmmaker-philosopher Terrence Malick has created some of the most visually arresting films of the last century, and his glorious period tragedy Days of Heaven, featuring Oscar-winning cinematography by Nestor Almendros, stands out among them. In the mid-1910s, a Chicago steelworker (Richard Gere) accidentally kills his supervisor, and flees with his girlfriend (Brooke Adams) and his little sister (Linda Manz) to the Texas panhandle, where they find work harvesting wheat in the fields of a stoic farmer (Sam Shepard). A love triangle, a swarm of locusts, a hellish fire—Malick captures it all with dreamlike authenticity, creating a timeless American idyll that is also a gritty evocation of turn-of-the-century labor.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai ~ 7:30 PM

From the writer of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Big Trouble in Little China comes a pop-sci-fi adventure that defies convention and went on to become one of the cult hits of the 80s.

Peter Weller is Buckaroo Banzai, a physicist-neurosurgeon-martial arts master-secret agent-rock star who has just made history with his invention, the Oscillation Overthruster. The Overthruster allows him to travel to the 8th Dimension, but this feat draws the attention of the Red Lectroids, an alien race (led by Christopher Lloyd) who have teamed up with Banzai s nemesis, the deranged Dr Lizardo (John Lithgow). Lizardo and the Red Lectroids are seeking the Overthruster to take over the world and Banzai, with his team of agents/band musicians, The Hong Kong Cavaliers, must stop them before it s too late!

With strong references to sci-fi and pop culture that span Thomas Pynchon and Orson Welles, Buckaroo Banzai is a film made by fans for fans and counts filmmakers including Wes Anderson and Kevin Smith among its admirers.

The Usual Suspects (Presented on 35mm by Odyssey Film Institute) ~ 7:30 PM

Winner of two Academy Awards for Original Screenplay (McQuarrie) and Supporting Actor (Spacey), this masterful neo-noir enraptured audiences with its twisting storyline, tour-de-force performances and jaw-dropping climax. “The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist,” says con man Verbal Kint, drawing a comparison to the most enigmatic criminal of all time, Keyser Söze. Kint attempts to convince the feds that the mythic crime lord not only exists, but is also responsible for drawing Kint and his four partners into a multimillion-dollar heist that ended with an explosion in San Pedro Harbor—leaving few survivors. But as Kint draws his interrogators into the incredible story of Söze’s almost supernatural prowess, so too will you be drawn into The Usual Suspects—one of the most gripping and diabolically clever thrillers of the ’90s. Written by Christopher McQuarrie (Top Gun: Maverick), directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men) and featuring a legendary lineup of actors: Gabriel Byrne, Benicio del Toro, Kevin Spacey, Chazz Palminteri, Stephen Baldwin, Kevin Pollak, Pete Postlethwaite, Suzy Amis, Giancarlo Esposito, Dan Hedaya, Paul Bartel, Clark Gregg and Peter Greene in an uncredited role as Redfoot the Fence.
