Red Spirit Lake/We Await Presented by Girls, Guts, & Giallo (Q&A w/ Filmmaker Charles Pinion)

Director Charles Pinion in attendance for post-screening Q&A hosted by Annie Rose Malamet (Girls, Guts, & Giallo) . Brief Intermission between films.

Red Spirit Lake (1993, 69 Minutes)

After a vengeful sorceress is tortured and killed by a corrupt industrialist looking to harnass the spectral powers of Red Spirit Lake, her niece arrives in snow covered Angel Falls to settle her aunt's estate. A meditation on The Old Dark House replete with UFO abductions, castration, frank nudity, witchcraft, fatal fistings, and slughterous saunas; Red Spirit Lake is a cacophony of subversive hyper violence, psychotic surrealism, salacious sexual chaos, and picturesque winter vistas with an an insurgent soundtrack featuring music by Cop Shoot Cop, Lydia Lunch, Clint Ruin, and The Lunachicks.

We Await (1996, 54 Minutes)

Set in San Francisco's Mission district, a con artist is held captive by an unhinged cannibal family that ingests copious quantities of hallucinogenic, green fungal goo covertly harnessed from an otherworldly, sentient crystal housed in their third third floor apartment of horrors. We Await is a shot on video, urban riff on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre that slowly descends into a psycho sexual, drug-fueled, analog aurora borealis nightmare like no other; boasting a blistering soundtrack featuring music by Crash Worship, Neurosis, and Unsane.

About the Filmmaker:

Charles Pinion is a visual artist and director who made the punk rock skateboard zombie movie Twisted Issues, the post-Cinema of Transgression witches in the snow movie Red Spirit Lake, and the gritty San Francisco cannibal movie We Await. His 3D feature American Mummy premiered at the Revelation Film Festival in Australia. His latest is the short film Try Again, "a hopeful film about suicide". Charles lives, writes, paints, and walks his dogs in Los Angeles.

About the Host:

Annie Rose Malamet is an internationally recognized lesbian vampire expert, freelance film writer, and perverted aesthete. She is the creator of the popular podcast Girls, Guts, & Giallo, where she examines controversial and subversive cinema through the lens of queer leather and sex work history and sensibilities. GORILLAZ: DEMON DAYS 20TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY (Art Pop-up, Live Drag Performances + Screening of Demon Days: Live)

This year the virtual band Gorillaz, the brilliant, decades long collaboration between musician Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett, celebrates the 20th anniversary of their sonic masterpiece Demon Days. By 2005, Gorillaz was already famous for its combination of catchy tracks and lovable virtual bandmates (brought to life through Hewlett’s incredible artwork). But Demon Day’s masterful genre mixing combined with its melancholic themes of early-aughts alienation have guaranteed its place in the canon of totemic albums from the 21st century, and a spot on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

To celebrate, the Balboa Theatre will be hosting a night to commemorate the band and their incredible album. On May 24th (the 20th anniversary of Demon Days release in the United States), we’ll be running a pop-up in our lobby with local art on sale inspired by Gorillaz followed by live drag performances by Piranha Psychotronica and more, as well as a screening of the band’s 2005 performance of the album at the Manchester Opera House.

Come early to buy fun Gorillaz-inspired art, win trivia prizes, and watch a specially curated pre-show in the theater, before jamming out with an audience of fans to the songs of a truly timeless classic!

Friday, April 25th

Headliner

Mario Hodge   IG @comedianmariohodge

Mario Hodge was born & raised in Oakland, CA. He is the youngest of 4 siblings, and he was inspired to be a comedian as a child by watching sitcoms like Sanford & Son, The Richard Pryor Show, The Carol Burnett Show, and the Three Stooges with his older siblings. It wasn’t until he watched In Living Color that he knew he wanted to be on TV and perform on stages in front of live audiences to make people laugh. Mario Hodge stepped on the stage in 2012 and has never looked back. He quickly rose in the comedy industry over a short period due to his creative writing and very animated style of comedy. In 2016, he had the #1 selling, 1-hour comedy unique in California called “I Can’t with You,” which he wrote and co-produced. He is multitalented, and often his comedic style is compared to the likes of Jamie Foxx, his favorite comedian.

However, Mario has his brand of comedy that makes him a crowd favorite wherever he performs. He has worked with the late great Charlie Murphy, Tony Roberts, Mark Curry, Luenell, Sinbad, Mo’nique, Adele Givens, and Tommy Davidson, and he tours with Faizon Love. He has also become a fan favorite on social media platforms for going viral several times with his character “Jheri Curl Gerald,” “Fleek’isha,” and his hilarious creative parodies of R&B singers. One of his most recent accomplishments he worked hand and hand with Kevin Hart in 2016, being chosen to feature on Kevin Hart’s new show called “Hart of the City, that appears on Comedy Central in 2017, he placed 3rd in the SF competition in 2022, and you can hear him twice a month on Kevin Hart’s LOL Radio Station, on SiriusXM CH 96 with Earthquake on Quake’s House where he’s a fan favorite. Comedian Mario Hodge is a sure must-see when he comes to your town. His creative mind and his hilarious animated style will have you crying with laughter and wanting more.

INHERENT VICE at 7:30

Inherent Vice, is the seventh feature from Paul Thomas Anderson and the first ever film adaption of a Thomas Pynchon novel.

When private eye Doc Sportello's ex-old lady suddenly out of nowhere shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend whom she just happens to be in love with, and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a loony bin... well, easy for her to say.

It's the tail end of the psychedelic `60s and paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that love is another of those words going around at the moment, like trip or groovy, that's being way too overused—except this one usually leads to trouble.

With a cast of characters that includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover, and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists... Part surf noir, part psychedelic romp—all Thomas Pynchon.

The film stars Oscar nominees Joaquin Phoenix (The Master, Walk the Line), Josh Brolin (True Grit, No Country For Old Men) and Owen Wilson (The Royal Tennenbaums, Midnight in Paris); Katherine Waterston (Michael Clayton, Boardwalk Empire); Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) and Benicio Del Toro (Traffic); Martin Short (Frankenweenie); Jena Malone (The Hunger Games series); and musician Joanna Newsom.

Gory revenge is raised to the level of visual poetry in Toshiya Fujita’s stunning Lady Snowblood. A major inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill saga, this endlessly inventive film, set in late nineteenth-century Japan, charts the single-minded path of vengeance taken by a young woman (Meiko Kaji) whose parents were the unfortunate victims of a gang of brutal criminals. Fujita creates a wildly entertaining action film of remarkable craft, an effortless balancing act between beauty and violence.

See it On 16 PRESENTS Gimme Shelter on 16mm film at 7:30

The landmark documentary about the tragically ill-fated Rolling Stones free concert at Altamont Speedway on December 6, 1969. Only four months earlier, Woodstock defined the Love Generation; now it lay in ruins on a desolate racetrack sixty miles outside of San Francisco. Before an estimated crowd of 300,000 people, the Stones headlined a free concert featuring Tina Turner, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers and others. Concerned about security, members of outlaw biker gang The Hell's Angels were asked to help maintain order. Instead, an atmosphere of fear and dread arose, leading ultimately to the stabbing death of a fan. What began as a flower-power love-in had degenerated into a near riot; frightened, confused faces wondering how the Love Generation could, in one swift, cold-blooded slash, became a generation of disillusionment and disappointment. December 6, 1969: the day the Sixties died. Presented on 16MM film!
