Citizen Kane @ 1 PM, 4 PM, & 7:30 PM

In the most dazzling debut feature in cinema history, twenty-five-year-old writer-producer-director-star Orson Welles synthesized the possibilities of sound-era filmmaking into what could be called the first truly modern movie. In telling the story of the meteoric rise and precipitous fall of a William Randolph Hearst–like newspaper magnate named Charles Foster Kane, Welles not only created the definitive portrait of American megalomania, he also unleashed a torrent of stylistic innovations—from the jigsaw-puzzle narrative structure to the stunning deep-focus camera work of Gregg Toland—that have ensured that Citizen Kane remains fresh and galvanizing for every new generation of moviegoers to encounter it.

Heaven's Gate (A Kyle's Styles Pick) @ 7 PM

A breathtaking depiction of the promise and perils of America’s western expansion, Heaven’s Gate, directed by Michael Cimino, is among Hollywood’s most ambitious and unorthodox epics. Kris Kristofferson brings his weathered sensuality to the role of a Harvard graduate who relocates to Wyoming as a federal marshal; there, he learns of a government-sanctioned plot by cattle barons to kill the area’s European settlers for their land. The resulting battle is based on the bloody real-life Johnson County War of 1892. Also starring Isabelle Huppert and Christopher Walken, Heaven’s Gate is a savage and ravishingly shot take on western movie lore. This screening presents the full director’s cut, letting viewers today see Cimino’s potent original vision.

Playing as part of Kyle’s Styles, a monthly program highlight a film selected by the Balboa’s own projectionist!

An Actor's Revenge @ 7:30 PM

A uniquely prolific and chameleonic figure of world cinema, Kon Ichikawa delivered a burst of stylistic bravado with this intricate tale of betrayal and retribution. Set in the cloistered world of nineteenth-century kabuki theater, the film charts a female impersonator’s attempts to avenge the deaths of his parents, who were driven to insanity and suicide by a trio of corrupt men. Ichikawa takes the conventions of melodrama and turns them on their head, bringing the hero’s fractured psyche to life in boldly experimental widescreen compositions infused with kaleidoscopic color, pop-art influences, and meticulous choreography. Anchored by a magnificently androgynous performance by Kazuo Hasegawa, reprising a role he had played on-screen three decades earlier, An Actor’s Revenge is an eye-popping examination of how the illusions of art intersect with life.

Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror (W/ The Bawdy Caste) @ 7:30 PM

When The Rocky Horror Picture Show first opened in London in 1973, no one involved could have ever imagined the long-lasting impact and legacy that the subversive rock musical would have on the queer and underground film communities.

As the movie adaptation turns 50 this year, the original cast, creatives, and other pop culture figures — including creator Richard O’Brien, stars Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Patricia Quinn, and modern-day icons like Trixie Mattel — reminisce about bringing the strange journey of Brad, Janet, and Dr. Frank-N-Furter to life… not to mention examining the ways in which it has shaped not only their own personal journeys, but culture at large.

Directed by Linus O’Brien (son of the show’s creator), Strange Journey is a love letter to a project that for decades has provided a safe space for outcasts, and has kept audiences around the world doing the time warp again and again and again.

MOViES FOR MANiACS: The Devils @ 7 PM

MOViES FOR MANiACS is thrilled to announce a very rare screening of the unrated director’s cut of Ken Russell’s THE DEViLS (1971) @ The Balboa Theatre on FRi. SEPTEMBER 12 at 7:00pm.

Part of the “GET OFF THE INTERNET” Film Festival, which showcases Radical Movies unavailable to stream online and can only be experienced in a theater.

7:00pm THE DEViLS: UNRATED DiRECTOR'S CUT (1971)

In 1971, Ken Russell set out to adapt Aldous Huxley’s 1952 non-fiction novel “The Devils of Loudun”, an account of a 17th-century Roman Catholic priest accused of witchcraft after a series of possessions. What culminated was one of the most controversial “faith-based” film productions of all time. Showcasing legendary performances by acting royalty, Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed, this intensely sexy and graphically violent X-Rated endeavor has inspired countless directors ranging from Paul Verhoeven to Stanley Kubrick to Joe Dante.

Upon release, the 117-minute director’s cut was banned in the UK as well as countless other countries, and has been heavily censored in the US for decades. It has never been available on any round disc (DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K) and is still, currently, unavailable on any streaming platforms. Do not miss this rare Unrated Director’s Cut screening courtesy of Warner Brothers. Running Time: 117 minutes. Warning: Extremely mature content

Come and See (40th Anniversary) @ 7:30 PM

This widely acclaimed film from Soviet director Elem Klimov is a stunning, senses-shattering plunge into the dehumanizing horrors of war. As Nazi forces encroach on his small village in present-day Belarus, teenage Flyora (Aleksei Kravchenko, in one of the screen’s most searing depictions of anguish since Renée Falconetti’s Joan of Arc) eagerly joins the Soviet resistance. Rather than the adventure and glory he envisioned, what he finds is a waking nightmare of unimaginable carnage and cruelty—rendered with a feverish, otherworldly intensity by Klimov’s subjective camerawork and expressionistic sound design. Nearly suppressed by Soviet censors who took eight years to approve its script, Come and See is perhaps the most visceral, impossible-to-forget antiwar film ever made.

The hapless hairdresser opts to leave Paris for his native Warsaw when his wife (Julie Delpy) sues him for divorce (her reason: their marriage was never consummated) and then frames him for arson after setting her own salon ablaze. White, which goes on to chronicle Karol Karol’s elaborate revenge plot, manages to be both a ticklish dark comedy about the economic inequalities of Eastern and Western Europe and a sublime reverie about twisted love.

LAUGH San Jose PRESENTS STOPPING BY

Avery Harmon (Chicago)

Co-Founder  Laugh San Jose

In 2017, comedian Avery Harmon made the journey from Chicago's windy city to the South Bay, where he discovered a thriving open mic and showcase scene. However, the  pandemic soon forced the closure of many venues, leaving him to frequently travel to SF, Oakland, & Santa Cruz to perform. Determined to create a more reliable core for comedy in the area, Avery partnered with Brian Moore to establish a new comedy hub in San Jose. This energetic and supportive community now welcomes talented performers from the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and beyond!

A seasoned performer, he has graced the stages of prestigious comedy clubs, from the legendary Jokes and Notes in Chicago to the renowned Punchline & Cobbs in San Francisco. Armed with his creative storytelling prowess and keen observational skills, he is poised to deliver an engaging and enjoyable performance.

Brian Moore (San Jose)

Brian “BMo” Moore is a San Jose based comedian and producer. His high energy style of comedy with a quirky perspective has brought him to stages all over California and beyond. BMo has performed at Cobb’s Comedy Club, Laughs Unlimited Sacramento, and San Jose Improv. He has also had the pleasure of hosting for comedy juggernauts Dean Delray, Ian Edwards and Roast Battle Champion Frank Castillo. Not to mention, he makes some of the best bacon in the world.

Taste of Cherry @ 7:30 PM

The first Iranian film to win the Palme d’Or, this austere, emotionally complex drama by the great Abbas Kiarostami follows the enigmatic Mr. Badii (Homayoun Ershadi) as he drives around the hilly outskirts of Tehran looking for someone who will agree to bury him after he commits suicide, a taboo under Islam. Extended conversations with three passengers (a soldier, a seminarian, and a taxidermist) elicit different views on mortality and individual choice. Operating at once as a closely observed, realistic story and a fable populated by archetypal figures, Taste of Cherry challenges the viewer to consider what often goes unexamined in everyday life.
