Double Indemnity ~ 1:30 PM & 4:30 PM

Has dialogue ever been more perfectly hard-boiled? Has a femme fatale ever been as deliciously wicked as Barbara Stanwyck? And has 1940s Los Angeles ever looked so seductively sordid? Working with cowriter Raymond Chandler, director Billy Wilder launched himself onto the Hollywood A-list with this epitome of film-noir fatalism from James M. Cain’s pulp novel. When slick salesman Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) walks into the swank home of dissatisfied housewife Phyllis Dietrichson (Stanwyck), he intends to sell insurance, but he winds up becoming entangled with her in a far more sinister way. Featuring scene-stealing supporting work from Edward G. Robinson and the chiaroscuro of cinematographer John F. Seitz, Double Indemnity is one of the most entertainingly perverse stories ever told and the standard by which all noir must be measured.

A night of laughs in the Richmond District you will not want to miss!

Headliner: Ronn Vigh
You might know this comedian from…
Early in his career, Ronn Vigh's brash attitude and acerbic wit earned him a comparison to a young Joan Rivers by the SF Weekly. It was certainly a fitting comparison as Ronn later became a writer for Rivers on her hit E! Television show "Fashion Police."
Ronn regularly performs at comedy clubs, colleges and festivals across the nation. He also co-hosts the sports-comedy podcast, "Switching Teams: A Gay Dude & A Straight Dude Talk About Sports."
His biggest accomplishment: Working briefly as a flight attendant and not attempting to smother any of his passengers with a pillow. Yes, there were complimentary pillows on the plane when Ronn did that job. Please don't do the math.

Host: Tony Sparks

Also known as the Godfather of San Francisco Comedy, Tony has been performing stand-up comedy since the dawn of the joke. He's opened for many famous comics long before they were famous. He's written for many comics, both now on television and others presenting the comedy circuit. He's a major fixture in the San Francisco comedy scene.

Special Guests

He performs regularly with Don’t Tell Comedy and the Alameda Comedy Club, and his comedy touches on everything from kids to race to relationships. The newest member of the #HellaFunny comedy group, Shivaan is a hilarious rising star in the San Francisco comedy scene, a regular at the Hella Funny shows, San Francisco Sketchfest, Cobbs Comedy Club, and opened for Hannibal Burress at the Palace of Fine Arts.

Wong Kar Wai’s loose sequel to In the Mood for Love combines that film’s languorous air of romantic longing with a dizzying time-hopping structure and avant-sci-fi twist. Tony Leung Chiu Wai reprises his role as writer Chow Mo-Wan, whose numerous failed relationships with women who drift in and out of his life (and the one who goes in and out of room 2046, down the hall from his apartment) inspire the delirious futuristic love story he pens. 2046’s dazzling fantasy sequences give Wong and two of his key collaborators—cinematographer Christopher Doyle and editor/costume designer/production designer William Chang Suk Ping—license to let their imaginations run wild, propelling the sumptuous visuals and operatic emotions skyward toward the sublime.

The Devil's Backbone ~ 1:30 PM & 4:30 PM

One of the most personal films by Guillermo del Toro, The Devil’s Backbone is also among his most frightening and emotionally layered. Set during the final week of the Spanish Civil War, it tells the tale of a twelve-year-old boy who, after his freedom-fighting father is killed, is sent to a haunted rural orphanage full of terrible secrets. Del Toro expertly combines gothic ghost story, murder mystery, and historical melodrama in a stylish mélange that, like his later Pan’s Labyrinth, reminds us the scariest monsters are often the human ones.

A night of laughs in the Richmond District you will not want to miss!

Headliner Patrick Eley

Patrick Eley started doing comedy in 2022 after moving from Chicago to Stockton, California in 2015 to chase his MMA dreams. Drawing on past lives as a chiropractor, equities trader, longshoreman, and martial artist, he delivers a dry, deadpan style that feels equal parts unhinged and grounded. He has opened for Shane Sydney Stigerts, Shane Gillis, Bruce Gray, and Steve Furey, and is currently featuring on James McCann’s U.S. tour.

Featuring Steve Ausburne

Steve Ausburne’s comedy career started with MC/Host work for friends with bands. His first attempt at actual stand up ended with a lifetime ban from a church in Grant’s Pass, Oregon.
Buoyed by that successful start, Steve has since embraced the stage as a place to present a spoken word memoir of all the embarrassing life moments that lurk in a place that only stand up or therapy sessions can reveal
Also, he is allergic to cats.
Steve peddles his comedic wares throughout Sonoma County and the San Francisco Bay Area.  He produces comedy shows throughout California's Wine Country and in addition to comedy performances, he is available for auctioneering, event hosting, work parties, voice acting, and private dancing.

Special Guests:

Melissa Christine

Melissa Christine is a humor writer and stand-up comedian based in San Francisco. She has performed at San Francisco Punchline, the San Jose Improv, Loons on the Lake Comedy Festival, and numerous basement bars throughout the country. Her writing tackles topics big and small, from abortion and the climate crisis to pharmacy rewards and fitted sheets.

Jide Okonkwo

With an international background, Jide brings a worldly (and sometimes otherworldly) perspective to the stage. Although based in the Bay Area, Jide has performed on many stages around the world, including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. A lover of laughter and mangoes, his sweet tooth is the perfect foil for his sharp tongue. Catch him light up the stage with his smooth & cheeky style.

Luis Diaz

Luis Díaz is a comedian from Puerto Rico based in Oakland (Bay Area). He performs in both Spanish and English, is a regular at comedy clubs and shows across California, and performs with the Spanish-language comedy group Comedy.Ando.

Detour ~ 1:30 PM, 3:30 PM, 5:30 PM & 7:30 PM

From the gutters of Poverty Row came a movie that, perhaps more than any other, epitomizes the dark fatalism at the heart of film noir. As he hitchhikes his way from New York to Los Angeles, a down-on-his-luck nightclub pianist (Tom Neal) finds himself with a dead body on his hands and nowhere to run—a waking nightmare that goes from bad to worse when he picks up the most vicious femme fatale in cinema history, Ann Savage’s snarling, monstrously conniving drifter Vera. Working with no-name stars on a bargain-basement budget, B auteur Edgar G. Ulmer turned threadbare production values and seedy, low-rent atmosphere into indelible pulp poetry. Long available only in substandard public domain prints, Detour haunts anew in its first major restoration.

The Bigamist ~ 7:30 PM (As Part of Kyle's Styles)

The Bigamist is an amazingly sympathetic portrait of a figure historically given very short shrift: the title character is not only a two-timer—he’s a traveling salesman as well. But, as embodied by that perpetually pressured everyman of the 1950s, Edmond O’Brien, the bigamist comes across as a victim of his own sensitivity. Caught between two complementary spouses, O’Brien’s dazed indecisiveness dominates the narrative. As always in Ida Lupine's directorial efforts, a strong social consciousness informs all choices: Joan Fontaine is an upper-crust “lady, ” reverently attached to her dying father, while Lupine herself plays a tough-talking working woman, waitressing in a cheap Chinese restaurant. But no on-screen triangle could beat the one behind the camera—The Bigamist was produced and written by Collier Young, Lupine's longtime collaborator and recently divorced husband, whose new wife was none other than Joan Fontaine.

Playing as part of Kyle’s Styles, a monthly program highlighting a film selected by one of the Balboa’s head projectionists!

Dead Lover ~ 7:30 PM (w/ Stink-O-Vision and hosted by MOViES FOR MANiACS)

MOViES FOR MANiACS is thrilled to present the opening night Stink-O-Vision screening of Dead Lover, complete with limited edition scratch and sniff cardsWriter-director-producer-star Grace Glowicki is hilariously unhinged as she inhabits a lonely gravedigger who, not only stinks of corpses, is desperate to find the man of her dreams. Playing four separate characters, Glowicki is somehow magically matched by her co-stars Leah Doz, Lowen Morrow, and Ben Petrie, who are each as equally bizarre as she.

Gorgeously shot on 16mm by Rhayne Vermette using both an Arri SR3 & a Bolex camera, this transgressive tour-de-force is a non-stop laugh-out-loud, absurdly lo-fi, horror camp-fest, inspired by Mary Shelley, German Expressionism, and seemingly, The Kuchar Brothers. What's most impressive is how this homemade homage to avant-garde cinema manages to achieve its very own surreal uniqueness, and should be placed alongside the outsider films it is honoring. Throw in a brand-new soundtrack by legendary Toronto pop project U.S. Girls (aka Meghan Remy) and you’ve got one of the best films of the year.

Hosted by Jesse Hawthorne Ficks, the Dead Lover Stink-O-Vision screenings turn cinema into a full body experience. Each audience member receives a scratch-and-sniff card created by scent artists, unleashing a carefully choreographed bouquet of aromas—funky, foul, seductive, and downright unholy—that sync with key moments in the film. From grave-dirt rot to dandy cologne, ghost puke to BBQ stank, the smells guide viewers through a journey of fetid, funky love where romance and revulsion collide.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure ~ 7 PM (as part of BALBOA'S 100TH CELEBRATION!)

Playing as part of the Balboa’s 100th anniversary festival! As the recipient of the First Annual Balboa Award, we will be spending all week long showcasing the illustrious career of the Oscar-nominated costume designer Aggie Rodgers.

Please consider joining us on Saturday, April 18th for our fundraiser celebration, where Rodgers will receive this inaugural award for her astounding lifetime of work.

One of the most eccentric comedies of the 1980s, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure is a pop-culture touchstone that helped make a manic oddball named Pee-wee Herman—the creation and alter ego of actor-comedian Paul Reubens—into an icon for outsiders of all ages. It also established the distinctive style of director Tim Burton, whose eye-popping visual sense is already on full display in this, his first feature film. Following the gleefully irreverent Pee-wee as he embarks on a road trip to recover his beloved stolen bicycle, the movie unfolds with the antic invention of a live-action cartoon, combining a gallery of memorably wacky characters, colorful, kitschy Americana, and surreal flights of fancy into a joyously uninhibited paean to creativity and the spirit of childhood.

Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 seminal neo-noir thriller The Conversation symbolizes the uneasy line between technology and privacy — a topic more relevant than ever today. Nominated* for three Academy Awards® and winner of the prestigious 1974 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or, this harrowing psychological-thriller stars Gene Hackman alongside Cindy Williams, Frederic Forrest, and Harrison Ford, and is regarded as one of Coppola’s greatest films. Harry Caul (Hackman) is a surveillance expert in San Francisco whose routine wiretapping job turns into a nightmare when he hears something disturbing in his recording of a couple — something a lot more important than adulterous goings-on. His investigation of the tape and how it might be used sends Harry spiraling into a web of secrecy, murder, and paranoia.

Keeping in the Shadows (SF Premiere) ~ 6:30 PM (SOLD OUT)

Keeping in the Shadows is a visually rich surf odyssey, moving between moody, dramatic landscapes and glowing, dream-like sunset sessions. Between travel chaos, early mornings, and long days in the water, the film opens up space for intimate, unscripted conversations, moments of humor, reflection, and honesty that give each section its own pulse and personality.

The film follows Noah Wegrich on a globe-spanning journey through five distinct countries. Along the way, he’s joined by an eclectic crew of our favorite surfers who also happen to be some of our closest friends - the kind of crew where talent runs deep, but camaraderie runs deeper. This crew includes Nat Young, Tanner Gudauskas, Pat Gudauskas, Brendon Gibbons, Torren Martyn, Bryce Baker, Parker Coffin, Cliff Kapono, Ian Crane, Wilem Banks, Noah Lane, Conor Maguire, Ben Coffey, Jordy Maree, and Gearoid Mcdaid.

The film is an ode to the surf films I grew up watching. It’s the idea of working on something that feels sacred and full of novelty, something we can fully give ourselves to, yet also step away from when needed. Taking time to think, to live, and then returning with a clearer, fresher perspective. Letting the work breathe.

It’s about moving slowly with something that holds deep meaning, instead of chasing attention spans or measuring relevance by other people’s standards. We’re not reacting, we’re listening. Going at our own pace, moving to the beat of our own drum, creating with purpose, and letting curiosity build naturally.

So Keeping in the Shadows means a lot of different things. At its core, it’s about holding things close, making art with intention, and staying true to why we started doing this in the first place.

The General ~ 7:30 PM

Many critics consider The General to be the last great comedy of the silent era, and it consistently ranks as one of the greatest comedies of all time on international critics’ polls. Set during the Civil War and based on a true incident, the film is also an authentic looking period piece, bringing the scope and realism of Matthew Brady-like images to brilliant life. The title refers not to Keaton’s character, but to his engine, The General, which figures prominently in one of the most harrowing and hilarious chase scenes ever filmed. Keaton portrays the engineer Johnnie Gray, who is rejected by the Confederate Army and then suffers the further humiliation of his girlfriend’s (Marion Mack) thinking him a coward. When a small band of Union soldiers penetrate far beyond Confederate lines to steal his locomotive, Johnnie Gray sets off in hot pursuit; seven of the film’s eight reels (are) devoted to the chase, with its orchestration of thrills and comedy. Keaton shot the film on the narrow railways of Oregon and used less than 50 titles to explain the whole story.

The Velvet Underground ~ 7:30 PM

Emerging from the primordial soup of glamour, gutter sleaze, and feverish creativity that was New York’s 1960s underground culture, the Velvet Underground redefined music with its at once raw and exalted blend of experimentation and art-damaged rock and roll. In his kaleidoscopic documentary The Velvet Underground, Todd Haynes vividly evokes the band’s incandescent world: the creative origins of the twin visionaries Lou Reed and John Cale, Andy Warhol’s fabled Factory, and the explosive tension between pop and the avant-garde that propelled the group and ultimately consumed it. Never-before-seen performances, interviews, rare recordings, and mind-blowing transmissions from the era’s experimental cinema scene come together in an ecstatic swirl of sound and image that is to the traditional music documentary what the Velvets were to rock: utterly revolutionary.
