One of Agnès Varda's most provocative films, Le bonheur examines, with a deceptively cheery palette and the spirited strains of Mozart, the ideas of fidelity and happiness in a modern, self-centered world.

Eddie Murphy rocketed to movie star status (and earned a Best Actor Golden Globe nomination) in this acclaimed action-comedy that pushes the limits of both genres. Nick Nolte is unforgettable as Jack Cates, a rough-edged Inspector on the hunt for two vicious cop-killers. Unlikely ride-along con Reggie Hammond (Murphy), is given 48-hour leave from prison to help Cates on the case. The laughs fly almost as much as the punches, as both men attempt two very different goals in a short amount of time.

The Taste of Tea ~ 7:30 PM (W/ Pop-Up by On Waverly)

The pristine image of the Japanese family is turned on its uber-polite head with surreal aplomb in this far out collection of hilarious vignettes. Set in the languid countryside, mom is an eccentric artist who eschews household chores for an animation project with occasional help from crazy grandpa. Meanwhile dad is just your everyday hypnotherapist. Their teenaged son suffers from hangups about the opposite sex while his little sister must contend with a doppelganger. Uncle is a groovy music producer on a respite whose ghostly past experiences still haunt him. Maverick director Katsuhito Ishii (who created the animated sequence in Kill Bill: Volume 1) pulled out all the stops for this endearing outré take on the Japanese psyche. Replete with non-stop irreverent gags, anime digressions, musical numbers and candy-coated lysergic passages, The Taste of Tea is, “a true delight that elevates feel-good cinema to a whole new level and charms from start to finish” (Screen Anarchy).

Presented in a new HD master supervised by the director.

12 Angry Men, by Sidney Lumet, may be the most radical courtroom drama in cinema history. A behind-closed-doors look at the American legal system that is as riveting as it is spare, this iconic adaptation of Reginald Rose’s teleplay stars Henry Fonda as the dissenting member on a jury of white men ready to pass judgment on a Puerto Rican teenager charged with murdering his father. The result is a saga of epic proportions that plays out over a tense afternoon in one sweltering room. Lumet’s electrifying snapshot of 1950s America on the verge of change is one of the great feature film debuts.

Mother and Son ~ 7:30 PM (As Part of Kyle's Styles)

Mother and Son is a slow, soft, and sad poem about the last day of a woman weakened by disease, and about the loving son who cares for her in her remote cabin home. Formal elements converge to reinforce the elegiac tone: the whispering wind, crashing waves, sea-gull cries, and other natural sounds recall the glissandi of violins; the images, distorted by filming through painted glass panes, mirrors, and special lenses, are reminiscent of German Romantic painting; the pace of the film verges on stillness, as though fixing on the moment between life and death, consciousness and oblivion. In the triumphantly pre-Freudian universe of the film, the parent is a literal burden who is carried through the world by her son in a sort of reverse pieta.

Frank Gehry has exploded the landscape of modern architecture, transforming it from a conventional science into a sublime and majestic form of art. Rebelling against the status quo, Gehry's struggle to create the impossible has resulted in such contemporary masterpieces as the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and the stunning Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. Beginning with rough sketches, then moving to models made of cardboard and tape, Gehry's genius transforms steel, titanium, and glass into the most heart-stopping structures the world has ever seen. Directed by his longtime friend and supporter, Academy Award®-winner Sydney Pollack (1985 Best Director, Out of Africa), the fascinating SKETCHES OF FRANK GEHRY looks inside the mind of the most acclaimed and controversial architect of the twenty-first century.

The Wrong Man ~ 12 PM (As Part of Hitchcock Fest 2026)

The Wrong Man is like and unlike any other Alfred Hitchcock movie. The story is packed with tension, the images are spellbinding, and the dilemma is genuinely frightening. But this time, the master of suspense dramatizes the harrowing true experiences of a man tried for crimes committed by a lookalike robber. Henry Fonda plays musician Manny Balestrero, a man full of visible but unspoken rage at his wrongful arrest. Vera Miles is his distraught wife, Rose, driven to madness by the ordeal. And the right man to bring the unsettling facts of the case to vivid screen life with documentary precision is Hitchcock. He made New York City a star of the film and cast real-life Balestrero case witnesses in small roles. He shot in many actual locations, among them the Stork Club, Manny’s jail cell and Rose’s sanitarium.

Strangers on a Train ~ 4:30 PM (As Part of Hitchcock Fest 2026)

Alfred Hitchcock directed this classic suspense tale - widely considered one of the master's best works - tapping into the evil that lies hidden just beneath the surface of each of us. When two strangers - tennis star Guy Haines (Farley Granger), whose wife will not grant him a divorce, and wealthy but deranged young Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker), who wants to be rid of his father - happen to meet on a train from Washington to New York, the conversation casually turns to a possibly perfect crime: what if each committed murder for the other? There is nothing to connect the two men. No apparent motive for either killing. When the trip ends, Guy believes the conversation was hypothetical, and that he will never see Bruno again. Then his wife is murdered...and Bruno returns for payback. Hard-boiled crime novelist Raymond Chandler co-wrote the screenplay of this film adaptation of the novel by Patricia Highsmith.

Masked and Anonymous (Director Larry Charles in Conversation With Jokermen Host Ian Grant) ~ 6 PM (Presented on 35mm by folkYEAH!)

In honor of Bob Dylan’s 85th birthday, it’s a Million Dollar Bash!

Jokermen Podcast, Folk Yeah, and the Balboa Theater present a 35mm screening of Masked & Anonymous (2003), followed by a very special live conversation between director Larry Charles and Ian Grant of Jokermen. Pre-show Dylan deep cut DJ set courtesy of 52 Gypsies.

Set in a near-future, post-revolutionary Los Angeles, Masked & Anonymous stars Dylan as Jack Fate, a forgotten rock icon hired to perform at a supposed benefit concert put on by Uncle Sweetheart (John Goodman), a manipulator of crowds, and dream twister Nina Veronica (Jessica Lange). Equal parts neo-noir, concert film, and slapstick comedy, the narrative proceeds according to its own obscure logic, like a film adaptation of “Desolation Row.” Dylan appears alongside an extraordinary cast of stars, including Jeff Bridges, Luke Wilson, Angela Bassett, Penélope Cruz, Ed Harris, Bruce Dern, Christian Slater, Giovanni Ribisi, Mickey Rourke, Cheech Marin, and the late Val Kilmer. Charles intercuts these dramatic scenes with extraordinary footage of performances by Dylan and the legendary 2002 Never Ending Tour band, widely regarded as the best group of players Dylan ever assembled.

Dismissed at the time of its release as an impenetrable piece of outsider art, Masked & Anonymous has aged as well as Dylan himself. What seemed like fantasy in 2003 reads as hard reality in 2026. Here is a world of failed states and civil wars; a world of mad kings and refugees; a world of phonies, fakers, hustlers, and artists. A damned world, in other words—but a world worth saving. Dylan and Charles ultimately offer a message of hope, one predicated on a bone-deep belief in the eternally redemptive power of rock music.

Stranger than Dont Look Back, less precious than I’m Not There, just plain better than A Complete Unknown, Masked & Anonymous is the definitive Bob Dylan motion picture. Don’t You Dare Miss It!

Kim Novak's Vertigo (San Francisco Premiere) ~ 5 PM (As Part of Hitchcock Fest 2026)

San Francisco Premiere

At 92, Kim Novak remains one of Hollywood’s most enduring enigmas - a luminous star who, at the peak of her fame, turned her back on the spotlight to embrace a life of self-expression and authenticity. Once the top box office draw in the world, she rebelled against the studio system and the confines of celebrity, choosing individuality over image, and art over artifice.

KIM NOVAK’S VERTIGO is a lyrical and intimate portrait, blending rare archival footage with deeply personal reflections and vivid glimpses into Kim’s reclusive life. While Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo remains her most iconic role, the film explores how that performance - and the duality it captured - mirrors the ongoing tension between image and identity that shaped Kim’s life. As she revisits fragments of her past a deeper story emerges: one of defiance, reinvention, and the quiet power of a woman who walked away from fame to remain true to herself.

Recognized for excellence in AFI's 100 Years…100 Movies, Vertigo is a "great motion picture that demands multiple viewings" (Leonard Maltin's Classic Movie Guide).

Double feature with the San Francisco premiere of Kim Novak’s Vertigo at 5 PM. A new documentary celebrating the life and career of Vertigo star Kim Novak.

Screening as part of this year’s Hitchcock Fest, running Friday, May 22 to Monday, May 25 at the Balboa. Click here for this year’s schedule.

The Sniper ~ 7:30 PM

One of the most shocking films of Hollywood’s golden age, The Sniper pits Adolphe Menjou (State of the Union) against Arthur Franz (The Caine Mutiny) in a deadly game of cat and mouse.

When misogynist delivery man Eddie goes on a killing spree, murdering women through the sights of his sniper rifle, it falls to detective Frank Kafka to second-guess his motives and put a stop to his rampage.

Directed by Edward Dmytryk (Murder, My Sweet), this chilling and controversial film noir is a favourite of Martin Scorsese, and has provided a prototype for films from Magnum Force to Se7en.

A Fistful of Dollars ~ 7:30 PM

It wasn't really the first film of its kind, but the western all'Italiana - or "spaghetti Western" - was never the same again after Sergio Leone's groundbreaking A Fistful of Dollars, starring Clint Eastwood in the classic role that made him an international icon.

A nameless stranger (Eastwood) rides into the Mexican border town of San Miguel and quickly finds himself in the middle of a bloody battle for power between two rival families, the Baxters and the Rojos. Cannily realising there's money to be made from playing each side against the other, the Man with No Name soon finds himself caught in the crossfire as the body count escalates, his only chance of escape a standoff against the Rojos' mercilessly cruel leader, Ramón (Gian Maria Volonté).

Leone's clever and contemporary inversion of Western archetypes was not only the first entry in a much-beloved trilogy, but the director's first collaboration with the brilliant composer Ennio Morricone.

Panicked, Vahid rounds up a few of his fellow ex-prisoners to try and confirm Eghbal's identity.  Master filmmaker Jafar Panahi creates a deeply felt moral thriller, where high stakes tension combines with unexpected flurries of humor and thoughtful, sometimes devastating questions regarding persecution and revenge.

Francis Ford Coppola’s 1974 seminal neo-noir thriller The Conversation symbolizes the uneasy line between technology and privacy — a topic more relevant than ever today. Nominated* for three Academy Awards® and winner of the prestigious 1974 Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or, this harrowing psychological-thriller stars Gene Hackman alongside Cindy Williams, Frederic Forrest, and Harrison Ford, and is regarded as one of Coppola’s greatest films. Harry Caul (Hackman) is a surveillance expert in San Francisco whose routine wiretapping job turns into a nightmare when he hears something disturbing in his recording of a couple — something a lot more important than adulterous goings-on. His investigation of the tape and how it might be used sends Harry spiraling into a web of secrecy, murder, and paranoia.
