Have you had a chance to enjoy our current movies? They must leave soon. This week the New York Times has a very good article on the evolution of Sherlock Holmes.
We are setting an opening date on a new Bollywood movie that we think our audiences will love. Don’t be put off by the title, 3 IDIOTS. This is a lot of fun, have serious themes and two of the most inventive musical numbers you’ve ever seen. More info to come as we confirm our opening date in late January. Visit the website.
For the first time we will show the Golden Globe Awards at the Balboa on Sunday, January 17. The show starts at 5pm, with Red Carpet at 4pm. With our new High Def digital projector, it is going to look fantastic. The only place to be for this evening of fun is the Balboa. Mark it on your calendar. All tickets $6.50. Advance tickets will be available at the Balboa box office and on Brown Paper Tickets this weekend.

Our Golden Globes presentation will benefit the San Francisco Film Society, presenters of the annual SF International Film Festival and many other year round programs.
The Balboa show will be hosted by emcee Reed Kirk Rahlman who has become so popular at our Oscar parties. During the commercials he’ll have contests and entertainment. And you won’t miss a second of the on-screen show via the miracle of DVR. The show will be projected on the Balboa’s spectacular new digital projector.
Sincerely,
Gary and the Balboa Staff
You might win a collection of Sherlock Holmes classic movies or the terrific TV series. MPI Video has provided the Balboa Theatre a selection of their Sherlock Holmes DVDs including box sets.
We have a box in our lobby where you can sign up to win one of two Grand Prizes! The first is The Complete Granada Television Series 12-Disc Box Set, (sells for $229) with Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes! The second is Basil Rathbone in The Complete Sherlock Holmes Collection (a $129 value), including 14 films on 5 discs! Winners to be drawn at random at the end of our Sherlock run.

Take a look at this fantastic selection. You might be tempted to buy some for yourself.
Steven Severin (Siouxsie and the Banshees, member of the Bromley Contingent) will perform his recent solo work Music for Silents live with video projection on January 12 at Mezzanine, as part of the San Francisco Film Society’s SF360 Film+Club. Featured is Severin’s soundtrack to the French avant-garde masterpiece The Seashell and the Clergyman (1928, dir. Germaine Dulac), along with a selection of other rare silent shorts, all of which will be screened in full and accompanied by Severin’s live musical performance.
Severin is known for weaving intense and dark musical tapestries, which lend themselves perfectly to Dulac’s film. The Seashell and the Clergyman is a surrealist classic that was met by antipathy on its original release by the British Board of Film Censors, which wrote that it is "apparently meaningless . . . But, if there is a meaning, it is doubtless objectionable."
Tickets $12 year-round SFFS members, $15 general. Must be 21+ to attend.
For tickets and program information, visit: www.sffs.org
You can enter to win a pair of tickets to see Music for Silents. To qualify, send an email with your name and email address in the body of the email and SEVERIN in the subject line. To qualify all entries must be received no later than Saturday, January 9 by midnight.
Please be certain that you can attend, as the tickets are not transferable. One entry per person. Multiple entries will disqualify all of them. If you have won tickets in a Balboa contest during the past three month, please do not enter.
Please send your entry to balboafans (at) yahoo.com . (Change (at) to @. We are trying to avoid spam.)
Good luck.

In a dynamic new portrayal of Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous characters, "Sherlock Holmes" sends Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson on their latest challenge. Revealing fighting skills as lethal as his legendary intellect, Holmes will battle as never before to bring down a new nemesis and unravel a deadly plot that could destroy the country.
"Playing literature's greatest detective as a sort of self-loathing action hero, Downey has an absolute blast. And thanks to his performance in Sherlock Holmes, so do we."
- Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic

Jane is the mother of three grown kids, owns a thriving Santa Barbara bakery/restaurant and has—after a decade of divorce—an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, attorney Jake. But when Jane and Jake find themselves out of town for their son’s college graduation, things start to get complicated. An innocent meal together turns into the unimaginable—an affair. With Jake remarried to the much younger Agness, Jane is now, of all things, the other woman.
"Streep is in movie star mode, and she’s irresistible. But Baldwin achieves something not many men have been able to with Streep: You notice him."
- Wesley Morris, Boston Globe

"The things these kids can do before breakfast…seem to push the envelope of human possibility. If daring and dexterity turn you on, this is a show that will probably twist you around in your seat…it’s amazing and exciting!"—New York Post
Breathtaking maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs...treacherous wire walking... astonishing displays of contortion...and all the excitement and festive pageantry of a Chinese Carnival! With the addition of dazzling special effects and live musical accompaniment from an authentic Chinese orchestra, these awe-inspiring tumblers, cyclists, jugglers, and clowns transform 2,000-year-old athletic disciplines into a kaleidoscope of entertainment and wonder.

One of the strengths of the Balboa is our neighborhood. Other than the bank, all the businesses are family owned and operated. The restaurants are especially wonderful. On the outer Balboa strip there are 24 eating establishments by my count. You can eat Chinese, Japanese, Egyptian, Italian, American, Mexican, Seafood and Vietnamese cuisines. The foods are fresh, distinctive and all reasonably priced. The media food critics have only discovered a few of them but the locals know a good thing. We encourage you to enjoy a meal at one of these fine eateries while visiting the Balboa. All are within easy walking distance. And please send us reviews and recommendations we can share with our other guests. Send reviews to balboafans (at) yahoo.com . (Change (at) to @. We are trying to avoid spam.)
We love it when you send us a review of a neighborhood restaurant you've enjoyed. We encourage you all to write about your culinary adventures in the Outer Richmond.
