DEAR FRIENDS,

We are very excited to be opening INCEPTION from the director of MEMENTO, INSOMINIA, THE PRESTIGE, BATMAN BEGINS, and THE DARK KNIGHT. The critics and those who have seen it at advance screenings are raving. This is going to be the kind of movie people may see more than once.

We hope that you will join us for it at the Balboa.

SILENT FILM FESTIVAL
One of the most wonderful and unique events on our calendar is the annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival. Those of you who have been before or attended a Balboa Birthday Bash know the wonders of seeing a silent film on the big screen with live music.

Stacey Wisnia and Anita Monga gather together an incredible selection of rare films and wonderful musicians from around the world. There are family members connected to the original filmmakers and many book signings plus a host of fascinating introducers and interviews.

I believe the restored METROPOLIS with the Alloy Orchestra is sold out with Rush tickets only (see website) but it is scheduled for a return regular theatrical engagement later in the year, alas with a recorded score. But there are so many wonderful shows. You’ll find the "Amazing Tales From the Archives" fascinating is you are interested in lost films being found. And both programs are FREE.

One of the Bay Area’s finest writers on silent films (and Balboa fan), Thomas Gladysz, has been writing a series of articles for examiner.com. Here is his latest about the festival.

SILENT FILM FESTIVAL
Read what he has to say about what may be the funniest 90 minutes you'll ever have when the director of UP!, Pete Docter, introduces three short films guaranteed to make you laugh until you cry. Bring the kids.

And his "15 Reasons to Atttend".

For the complete schedule, pick up a flyer at the Balboa or go to: www.silentfilm.org and http://sfsilentfilmfestival.blogspot.com/.

ONLY AT THE BALBOA - CYRUS AND INCEPTION PRIZES
We will have some posters to give away at evening shows of CYRUS this weekend and you can enter our lobby drawing to win a very special, limited edition tee shirt (adults only please).

HOW SMART IS YOUR RIGHT FOOT?
This was forwarded to me and is kind of amazing. I wish I could be there to see what happens when you try it. Have fun. It will boggle your mind and keep you trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but you can't. It's pre-programmed in your brain!

1). Without anyone watching you (they will think you are GOOFY...) and while sitting at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles.

2). Now, while doing this, draw the number '6' in the air with your right hand.

Your foot will change direction.

I told you so! And there's nothing you can do about it! You and I both know how stupid it is, but before the day is done you are going to try it again, if you've not already done so.

Send it to your friends to frustrate them too.

#1 ON BAYLIST
Thanks for your many kind words about the Balboa winning #1 Indie Theater on BayList.
We love all the comments on the list too.

AND SAN FRANCISCO MAGAZINE
The readers of San Francisco Magazine also love us. We came in number 2 and can’t complain about the company.

Sincerely,
Gary

"As much as I want to describe in meticulous detail the ways upon ways that I loved Christopher Nolan's INCEPTION, there's a part of me that almost wants you to not read this until you've seen the film itself. Not unlike Warner Brothers' marketing campaign has suggested, it's a film that benefits from knowing as little as possible about it before seeing it, because its individual twists and turns are almost as exciting to discover as their cumulative visceral, intellectual and emotional impact. Inception is a stunning achievement and the most completely entertaining film I've seen in years."
- Todd Gilchrist, Cinematical

"In this wildly ingenious chess game, grandmaster Nolan plants ideas in our heads that disturb and dazzle. The result is a knockout."
- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

"A fiendishly enjoyable sci-fi voyage across a dreamscape that is thoroughly compelling."
- Kirk Honeycutt, Hollywood Reporter

"One of the year's best films, one that will surely get even better upon repeated viewings."
- Christy Lemire, Associated Press

"If movies are shared dreams, then Christopher Nolan is surely one of Hollywood's most inventive dreamers, given the evidence of his commandingly clever Inception."
- Justin Chang, Variety

"The movie of the SUMMER. The movie of the YEAR."
- Pete Hammond, Box Office Magazine

"Pure cinema at its best feels like dreaming with your eyes wide open."
- Jeremy Smith, Ain't It Cool News

CYRUS

CYRUSRated R for language and some sexual material. 1 hour 32 minutes.

With John's social life at a standstill and his ex-wife about to get remarried, a down on his luck divorcée finally meets the woman of his dreams, only to discover she has another man in her life - her son. Still single seven years after the breakup of his marriage, John has all but given up on romance. But at the urging of his ex-wife and best friend Jamie, John grudgingly agrees to join her and her fiancé Tim at a party. To his and everyone else's surprise, he actually manages to meet someone: the gorgeous and spirited Molly. Their chemistry is immediate. The relationship takes off quickly but Molly is oddly reluctant to take the relationship beyond John's house. Perplexed, he follows her home and discovers the other man in Molly's life: her son, Cyrus. A 21-year-old new age musician, Cyrus is his mom's best friend and shares an unconventional relationship with her. Cyrus will go to any lengths to protect Molly and is definitely not ready to share her with anyone, especially John. Before long, the two are locked in a battle of wits for the woman they both love-and it appears only one man can be left standing when it's over.

"Instead of just offering slices of life, which might be interesting enough, they are devising real stories and placing vivid characters in collision."
- Mick LaSalle, SF Chronicle

"The movie doesn’t eagerly jump from one payoff to another, but attunes itself to nuance, body language and the habitual politeness with which we try to overlook social embarrassment."
- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"Delightfully demented and unique."
- Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post

"A comedy of discomfort that walks a wonderful line between reality-based emotional honesty and engaging humor, it demonstrates the good things that happen when quirky independent style combines with top-of-the-line acting skill."
- Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

"Above all, it deftly captures the ambiguity and absurdity of human relationships. With improvised dialogue and performances that go from uncomfortable to honest, Cyrus is an off-kilter charmer."
- Claudia Puig, USA Today

NEIGHBORHOOD RESTAURANTS

One of the strengths of the Balboa is our neighborhood. Other than the bank, all the businesses are family owned and operated. The restaurants are especially wonderful. On the outer Balboa strip there are 24 eating establishments by my count. You can eat Chinese, Japanese, Egyptian, Italian, American, Mexican, Seafood and Vietnamese cuisines. The foods are fresh, distinctive and all reasonably priced. The media food critics have only discovered a few of them but the locals know a good thing. We encourage you to enjoy a meal at one of these fine eateries while visiting the Balboa. All are within easy walking distance. And please send us reviews and recommendations we can share with our other guests. Send reviews to balboafans (at) yahoo.com . (Change (at) to @. We are trying to avoid spam.)

We love it when you send us a review of a neighborhood restaurant you've enjoyed. We encourage you all to write about your culinary adventures in the Outer Richmond. Check out the Menu Book in our lobby and our COMPLETE RESTAURANT LIST.
