This email was sent out to the Balboa Newsletter Group and generated more response than anything I have written in the past 3 years:

June 7, 2004

Dear Friends,

We get lots of compliments on our programming. They come by email, letter, telephone and in person. We appreciate them all and look forward to new ideas and constructive criticism that help make the Balboa an even better place for you to enjoy the movies. This is important as we work harder to compete against the megaplexes and home entertainment. As you know, several neighborhood theaters have recently closed or will soon.

Adding to the difficulty is the beautiful weather. While we enjoy the sun and warmth too, you probably never thought how much it affects our business. And with day light savings time stretching your outdoors hours into the evening, it becomes even more of a challenge for us. The big new mega hits pull in audiences (The Metreon grossed $227,000 in 3 days on HARRY POTTER!) but for smaller theaters it is a tough time of the year for us to meet our overhead.

We hope that the mix of movies we choose satisfies the broadest possible audience. But once in a while we get a call that frustrates us. It happened last week. A woman called when we were not open. She started in on a rambling monologue: "Why are you playing foreign movies. We don't want the Balboa to be one of those art theaters. You lose your audience when you don't book Hollywood movies. And why would you play a cartoon…that TRIPLETS movie? I guess you don't want to spend enough money to get them. Everybody I know is going to boycott the Balboa."

No name is given and no contact information provided. It is hard to respond. In case the caller reads this email, and for anyone else curious about our booking policy, here is a brief rundown.

The Balboa wants to show the highest quality movies we can. They might be Hollywood studio movies, independents, documentaries or foreign films. Most Hollywood blockbusters show in so many theaters when they first open that they use up all of their audience before distributors will consider a neighborhood theater booking, usually 6-10 weeks after the initial opening. Generally when we do play them there is poor attendance. From your support and comments, our audiences mostly want the alternative movies. These are films with good word-of-mouth and they can sustain longer engagements in the marketplace. The audiences they attract also tend to be more sophisticated and less rowdy than an action hit might attract and you have let us know how much you appreciate the resulting environment at the Balboa. (Those who came to the Balboa before Feb. 2001 know that we took the video games out of the lobby as soon as we took over.)

And it isn't a question of how much we pay for our films. We pay a percentage of the box office receipts and it is generally the same no matter what the movie. There are movies we try to book every week but if the First Run theater is holding or the small distributor has only a few prints, we have to wait. If the Balboa were First Run we would pay a much higher percentage and you would pay a higher admission price for one movie.

For those who don't like foreign films I must apologize, as this coming week we will have 3 of them. And they are all terrific.

Sincerely,

Gary

Here is a sampling of responses. I have left them in their original form(s). I am only sorry a few really terrific comments with constructive criticism asked not to be included. If you wrote but didn't make such a request, your note might be included but in all cases I have only included a first name. I wish I could have responded to every one of you but it wouldn't have been possible as over 200 emails came within 3 days. I have responded to a few in blue type like this below.

Dear Gary and Staff of the Balboa:

I enjoy your theater, the interesting choice of movies and movie combinations, the warm and professional people, and the great popcorn (w/ butter in the middle as well as on the top).

I have access to videos and dvds. But every so often, I love to "go to the movies".

When I was a child in the (late) fifties, it was a treat to go to the movies with my parents, every Friday. Money was tight, but that was our family treat.

The movie, the intermission music, the wonderful smells of snacks in The lobby. My old movie theater in Honolulu, had a big fishpond, but the "lady of the pond", at your entrance will do as well ! That old theater is gone, replaced by concrete apartment complexes. Sigh…at least I have the memories.

The Balboa theater is my treat for me and my husband.

I even feel at ease, coming on my own, to your theater. It's even been a nice retreat, when the outside world gets a little crazy. And when I come out, I feel refreshed. It's like an affordable little getaway to another dimension.

Thank you for being just where you are.

Aloha,

Aina

Dear Aina,

Your words are like poetry. Thanks so much for your lovely memories and compliments. We are always happy to be both a shelter from the storm of the outside world and a great place to enjoy the movies.

Sincerely,

Gary

Gary, after reading what that woman said about foreign films I decided to write you an email — which I never do — to say that I really like all the movies that you play there. And, even though I don't make it to all the films that play at the Balboa, I still appreciate the choices you have made over the years. For me it shows some real thought into what consists quality in movie making.

It isn't easy for me to make it to the Balboa, but I love going to your theater. And, I really like the price of admission, but hardly ever take advantage of the price for a double-bill because I am not always in the mood to sit through two movies, but that doesn't stop me from wanting to see a movie there instead of a different theater.

I also want to say that there aren't too many other places to see movies like "The Triplets of Belleville" — a movie which I thoroughly enjoyed!

By the way… I dislike reading subtitles as much as the next guy, but I do it in order to experience something I want not normally have the opportunity to do.

Thank you very much for playing movies with intelligence — even if they are in a foreign language. See you there soon!

Sincerely, Ian

I could respond to the awful and unnecessary phone message you received and shared, but I am not of that level.

My husband and I enjoy the movies that you play and try to make it a regular Saturday event — when money permits. If we wanted to see blockbusters we would go to the "big" theaters.

Frankly, we make it a point to never go to the metreon or the amc 1000. Only rarely, and I mean RARELY, do we go to the kabuki — when a blockbuster is absolutely in order.

Foriegn films, artsy crap (like the robot movie), documentaries, and smaller and more intellectual films are what we want to see and we want to see them at the Balboa!! We like our Giant refillable popcorn, we like the polite emo kids and the lady behind the counter, and we laugh at the sprinkles for the popcorn, but never use them. We like being able to walk to the theater — not to far to be a drag, far enough to be a wee bit o' exercise. We like the isle that was altered for handicap viewers — the row behind it gives lots of leg room.

So, thank you for the great selection of films. Keep it up and remember that whoever left that message is probably a little "off" in the head! Or just insensitive.

Thanx,

Jennifer and Mike

hey Gary-

just wanted you to know - I read that e-mail and contrary to that anonymous opinion, I'll identify myself - you're doing a great job! You sound like a business owner who cares abt more than profit, and wants to give the customer what he/she wants, but I think you are on the right track with your current programming.

I am a regular Balboa patron and I do not go to the Balboa for first run movies. I can go to the Metreon for that. And I don't want to go there. I really enjoy your eclectic mix - you are appealing to a truly San Francisco movie goer who is looking for something different; something other than the summer blockbuster.

keep the faith, bro!! You're doing a fantastic job and I would not have it any other way.

p.s. I sent an e-mail a couple weeks ago asking if you would carry the French trilogy that was at the Balboa, and you said no. I was very impressed with your prompt reply. Hey, if you don't carry something I enquired about, I don't hold it against the theatre. Something else will come along that is an intriguing double bill that I want to see.

THE BALBOA IS GREAT!!

Thanks,

Cathy

There were a couple of reasons we didn't show the French trilogy. The distributor is a small company and they only have a few prints that are booked up across the country. It is also unweildly to schedule three feature length films. We are in discussion about showing them on three successive weekend mornings.

Ignore that message - love your foreign films, and appreciate your theater, its reasonable prices, and sometimes even a double bill. Foreign films are mostly better than U.S. ones….loved Goodbye Lenin but not the Jim Carrey one with it - but you can't win them all!!

Keep up the good work

Adrienne

Hi Gary and the Balboa….I think the Balboa is the greatest theatre in The world. We recently saw Kill Bill and it was a truly wonderful experience…and I also love the artsy little movies that really stir the soul in amazing ways. Thank you as always. Maybe this woman was taking anger out that she might be storing and has nothing to do with the theatre. A fan…

Kara

My favorite theatre in my life was THE STRAND! i miss it dearly! i have been in the city for 26 yrs! i am told you also do programs for the castro! i would like to see more pop culture films somewhere! ELVIS! DORIS DAY! beach movies! maybe a DIVAS WEEK? RAQUEL! MARILYN N BARDOT! I am a film lover! FOREIGN! HOLLYWOOD! OLD! NEW! 70eez week? 80eeez week? FOOD FOR THOUGHT!

Raven

I really like your movie selections, and drive to the Balboa (from So. SF) as often as I can. In fact, I am going there today and my day off!

You have transformed that theater.

Barbara

Dear Gary,

Thank you so much for the outstanding programing that you do for the Balboa. I've worked as a student advisor at UC Berkeley for twenty five years. (Six of them were wonderfully invested with Film Studies.) My evaluations from students are generally excellent. But I often tend to focus on the negative ones.

This person is certainly entitled to his/her opinion. Heck, I would have probably felt the same way a few decades ago. But the Balboa is a >wonderful addition to the bay area's culture landscape. Don't let a squeaky gear or two get to you. Man, I'm grateful for an opportunity to view great foreign movies at your theater. GLOOMY SUNDAY was one of the best films I saw last year.

I loved GOODBYE LENIN and BON VOYAGE. You can make book that I'll be catching up with TWILIGHT SAMURAI at the Balboa.

Best always,

Marty

Hi Gary,

Sorry to read you receive those kinds of calls from people who are not even willing to use their name when stating their opinions. I think you are doing a terrific job!

regards,

Gene

I on the other hand loooooooove your selections. One person's opinion does not a decision make!! Sheila

Good Grief, Charlie Brown, how long do you have to live in SF before you realize that if you listen to EVERY weirdo that complains about something, your head will explode…..

Don't worry, plenty of us LIKE foreign films. And some American films. And art films. And Hollywood lollipop films. And classics… Some of us might even want more art films and foreign films, but will actually respect your programming decisions.

Sama

Hi

I like your selection A LOT.

It is not all foreign films you have. I watched HIDALGO and HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG in recent months.

Tell that caller to give her name, be accurate and go to the mall

Lee

To a certain extent, I agree with the lady re foreign films. I do not enjoy them either, but I know a lot of people do like them and you have to keep them happy too. What I do not like is the English sub-titles on the bottom. It is very distracting. Also I come to the Balboa to relax, not read. I can read at home. My suggestion would be to print in large letters at the top of the movie review in your email that the movie is in ------- language. Then I just will not come to that movie. One time I came to a movie that I did not know was foreign, and I was really upset! I am on a limited budget, and I really enjoy your low senior price and double features. Keep up the good work! Just tell> me when the movie is foreign. Thank you.

Phyllis

Dear Phyllis,

I know many people who feel as you do. And then, if they see a good movie, they quickly forget it has subtitles and become totally engrossed.

The first movies, silents, had titles everybody had to read. Some of the greatest films ever made are foreign and have titles. People around the world watch American movies in English with subtitles.

As to your suggestion, at the request of a customer a few years ago I started doing just what you ask. At the end of the mini reviews by show times and under ABOUT THIS WEEK'S MOVIES we state the language and if there are subtitles. But I hope that won't scare you away if the movie sounds interesting.

Thanks for taking time to write.

Gary

Thank you for answering my email. What you say is true, but not for me. What I am asking is print the language at the top of the review instead of the bottom so I don't have to bother to read the review. That is not asking too much. I like your theater and attend often. I want to keep coming. Thanks.

Phyllis

Phyllis,

Our surveys show that most people want the following information in this order:

1. Title and showtimes
2. Synopsis and cast
3. Rating
4. Language with titles if appropriate
5. Running Time

I place the language info at the end of the synopsis/mini review so it is easy to find without having to read the review.

We came to this format from trial and error combined with asking our readers. I am sorry it doesn't work just as you'd like it but I hope you can adapt easily.

Even better, you might be seduced by a really great subtitled film and find them more user friendly. Try BON VOYAGE or GOODBYE LENIN.

Thanks for your input.

Gary

Dear Gary,

I know you'll probably be bombarded with supportive emails, but wanted to add my two cents.

Please don't change a thing! Despite the fact that I live on the other side of town (in the Mission District) and could easily go to a closer independent theater, the Balboa offers such a welcoming atmosphere that my family has made it our first choice for movie-going. We even hold out going to watch "blockbuster" films when we know that you may be offering it at a later date. Blockbuster venues are a dime a dozen. While they definitely serve a purpose, they are huge, noisy and completely impersonal — exactly the opposite of what makes the Balboa such a great place to sit back and enjoy a foreign film.

Pat

You are doing a great job. Ignore the foolish call. Let her go to the bigger theaters and we can enjoy the good foreign films in our small neighborhood theater.

Thanks,

Loretta

dear balboa,

as a long time movie buff, who prides himself on appreciating good cinema — foriegn and domestic, i want to say i think your choice of films is impeccable.

last night i took my wife out to dinner at thai nation and then to see the 9:10 showing of "eternal sunshine of a spotless mind".

this incredible work was panned by many and praised by others, but if it wasn't for the balboa. we would have never seen it on the big screen and may have passed on it on video.

you are not an "art house"…nor do you pander to the lowest common denominator. you are truly unique and one of the city's real treasures…i feel you are our neighborhood theatre, even though we live in north beach/ chinatown area.

thank you and bravo!

rob and lily

Dear Gary:

I think when someone calls to just bitch, doesn't leave a name, and claims to backed up by "everyone"….it's cowardly, to say the least. It's also crap. I have mentioned this in a previous email, but I am willing to buy a "subscription" to the Balboa…a monthly fee to see the movies. Don't know if it would be nonprofit status for tax purposes or not, but I'd still do it.

Thank you. The Balboa is great!

Debbie

Gary, Please do not give any unnecessary importance to this singular complaint. Obviously, the complainer has no understanding of your cinematic values, your artistic knowledge, or your community efforts. Moreover, Balboa's many positive achievements are infinitely larger than one negative, thoughtless criticism. Lynda

Thank you so much for continuing your booking policy of independent/alternative/foreign/and other films of interest. Personally, I think the US does not get enough foreign films anymore, so when they are booked I am particulaly pleased. Thanks again, Vi

I love foreign movies!

Rayna

Dear Gary,

Please don't apologize to anyone for showing foreign films. I, for one, am grateful that the Balboa shows foreign and "alternative" films. If I want to see a blockbuster film, I go to a theatre with a giant screen. It's just nice to have smaller theatres around like the Balboa, Clay, Bridge, etc. so we who appreciate smaller films have that choice. Keep up the good work and don't listen to those nincompoops who don't like foreign films.

Dear Gary,

Rarely do I write comments. But after reading the comment about showing only/more Hollywood movies, I have to tell you that we have enjoyed the excellent movies you have selected for the Balboa. Thank you very much. Keep up selecting the good movies! Yours truly, Bea

Dear Mr. Meyer -

After reading about your phantom critic, I felt compelled to write you. How frustrating to receive such a critical voicemail and not be able to respond.

I think the programming at the Balboa is wonderful. You do a great job bringing us a wide variety of films both foreign and domestic (I mean where else can you see a French animated film, American action film and an high-quality surf film with the director in the theater signing posters, all in the same week). Your weekly update with reviews and info about the film festivals is terrific. You treat your customers like we are part of a special community. And the staff, well to say they are the best around really doesn't start to express how friendly and knowledgeable they are.

Keep doing what you're doing.

Best,

Steph

Hi there Mr Meyer!

I wanted to thank you for everything you are doing for the neighborhood and for the City in general. I am a native San Franciscan of the Richmond District and my family and I appreciate what you are doing with the Balboa Theater. It frustrates and angers me that you'd even receive lame phone calls like that. You are very patient. Please don't let people like that get you down. They have plenty of other places where they can go enjoy their "Hollywood" movies in a neon purple theater with an arcade.

I am an illustrator and designer and have worked with various newspapers, magazines, and museums throughout the City. If you ever need any illustration, art, or design work for the Balboa, I would be more than willing to volunteer to help.

Thank you again and please know that you are appreciated.

Best wishes,

Jamie

Dear Gary — Just wanted to put my two cents in.

I'm so glad BON VOYAGE is coming. I've loved nearly every foreign film you've shown. We are so lucky that some of them even made it to our little theatre.

Gary, I would be happy with ONLY foreign films!

Or foreign films and documentaries.

Actually you've done a great job of film selection, generally speaking. (With the exception of things like Kill Bill. I seldom walk out on a Balboa film, but after the lovely Twilight Samurai, I just couldn't stomach "Bill.")

Most of the Balboa patrons like films that are uplifting, informative, or thought-provoking. OR just a true "work of art." The majority of the films at the Balboa are in that category.

I am one of those people who does not patronize the big block buster, high budget - "violence, sleazy sex, mindless garbage" that is so much a part of America's cultural wasteland.

I'm glad that theatres like the Rafael and the Balboa offer a selection of wonderful films that one cannot find in the average American movie house. And you manage to out-do the Rafael in obtaining wonderful obscure foreign gems! From all over the world! How lucky we are!

Don't worry about the person who complained about the foreign films. She should go elsewhere. And there are plenty of places she can go!

Let those of us with a higher taste in the quality of film making, have our little wonderful alternative art theatres, like the Balboa! And thank you for all of the special events, the opportunities to meet independent film makers, and the many thoughtful "extras" that are so characteristic of you, and all of the Balboa staff!

Dear Gary,

Please don't let that caller get to you. There are many folks out there who greatly appreciate the Balboa and it's quirky mix of Hollywood films and alternative fair. I go for the alternative myself, but it's good to mix it up for everybody. I can't wait for the Corporation, I saw it was at the Castro this week, but now that I know you are trying to get it, I will wait and come to the Balboa. Yes, I enjoy the Balboa even more than the Castro (although nothing against the Castro). I hope you will play Michael Moore's latest (once it's through at the expensive places like Embarcadero). I refuse to spend $9 and up for one movie. Although I love to collect DVD's (especially foreign films and hard to find older stuff), I don't see a conflict in also supporting a local small theater such as the Balboa. I try to support both your place and the 4 Star (since I am a local Richmond District resident).

Best Balboa moment in recent past: Bringing my wife to see the great skater documentary, Dogtown and Z Boyz, at a midnight show with free prize giveaways. That was fantastic!

Thanks for playing the Station Agent a few months ago. We really enjoyed that very different movie, and would have missed it if you hadn't played it.

My personal dream would be to run a small neighborhood theater, just as you are doing. In my opinion, you have one of the greatest jobs out there!

Justin

Dear Gary,

Keep up the great work and I promise to continue to patronize the Balboa. Let's pray for rain and fog while we are at it!!

Cheers,

Maggie

Dear Gary and all Balboa folks,

Your choice of films is what keeps our neighborhood from extreme lack of communication. Please don't stop showing foreign films we need them and want them. I and my friends love you for rescuing the Balboa and keeping your integrity.

Peace.

Pat

Dear Gary,

Just finished reading the Report and wanted to express our 2 cents. We are greatly satisfied with the programming at the Balboa. There is no question in our minds that you go for quality. We appreciate it and attend whenever the program changes. As you must have learned by now you are not going to please everyone, especially when dealing with the public! The renovations have made it a pleasant experience, but the films are the piece de resistance.

Your best bet is to ignore people like that who like to make everyone else's life miserable, except their own (which is probably already that way). We don't like to attack others, but we know how hard you have worked to make the Balboa successful and it is a labor of love, so we are totally behind you.

Keep up the good work. We were in France during Cannes and really enjoyed the TV coverage. Kept looking for you, but…. you were probably in a bistro having a pastiche or attending a wild party or strolling on the beach at midnight. "Nice work if you can get it, and you can get it if you try", to quote a line from a favorite song.

Warmest Regards,

Bert and Dale

Dear Gary and Balboa Staff,

As the saying goes, you can't please them all… It's too bad the caller didn't leave you any contact info so you could respond to her complaint, but some people just like to vent anonymously. I seriously doubt she's rallied her troops in a boycott.

I think your programming is excellent. I was very impressed by the number of people attending "Touchez pas au grisbi" several months ago after it finished its Castro run — and I was also really happy I still had a chance to see it, since I missed it at the Castro. And your snacks and prices are waaay better than Landmark's. Thanks, and keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

Kate

Just wanting you and yours to know how grateful I am for the Balboa. I live over on Dolores Street and I find it well worth the trip. I am a true movie lover, yet over the past years my going has declined because of what an ordeal it is getting into a film and then the distractions (talking, cell phones, etc.) that one must endure. So it is a great pleasure to go to your theater and emesh myself in the transportive world that is so lovingly provided. Thanks very much and all the best to you and your loved ones. In peace, Annie

Gary: Your choice of films is exceptional. I guess it's that old adage about not pleasing all of the people all of the time. Your newsletter is great and full of information that I am interested in. Your Cannes descriptions were colorful and informative. Keep up the good work. The changes to the Balboa are really good. Jim

The Balboa is my favorite theater in the city! I am consistently impressed with the programming, and I always check your listings first. I wish that I could say that I always brought a group of friends with me to support your theater, but usually I see movies by myself. You are that good! Please let me know if there is anything that I could do to support you guys, and don't be thwarted by the occasional bitter soul!

Sincerely, Saskia

Hello,

Just writing to tell you how much I appreciate the programming at the Balboa. Thank goodness there is a place to see films from other countries, in other languages.

I really appreciate it.

Heidi

Hi Gary,

I love the Balboa, I love the great, diverse programming and I love the attention and care you and the staff put in to creating a top-notch neighborhood theater.

Keep on truckin!

Big Balboa Supporter.

Paul

I find it very doubtful that people would boycott based on showing of independent films, you can see all of the formula stuff just about anywhere.

Case in point, "Gloomy Sunday" 1 wk at Lumiere, 1 wk at Opera Pl and because it was soooo good 11 wks at Balboa, not much advertising but word of mouth kept it going! Of course it didn't make much money, like "the Day After" will, which by the way has one of the dumbest stories in Hollywood history.

Keep the indies alive! Rosemary

Hi Gary,

Just want to give you my support that I think your choices of movies is outstanding. I have not been to the Balboa for some time now and that is because I am in the midst of moving and my partner and I live in Marin, but we always check to see what is playing at the Balboa because of the choices.

Recently, we have seen all the ones that you are showing. The one that I haven't seen is Kill Bill 2 and I don't care to see that kind of movie. Tarantino may be a great director/producer, but the violence is too much for me and I don't go see violent movies period.

So, I think that the woman who wrote about boycotting the Balboa because you don't get more big Hollywood movies is expressing her opinion and obviously she should go to the big theaters and see them at their high prices. She never consulted with me to boycott and I encourage you not to have big Hollywood movies.

So we will be coming to the Balboa soon and excited about your new changes which we have not seen yet.

KEEP THE BALBOA LIKE IT IS.

Hope that puts a little faith into you.

Darrel

Shame, shame, shame on that woman who left that message regarding foreign films. If she wants those Hollywood films, she should frequent those theaters.

Born and raised in San Francisco, I relish the BALBOA, the selection and quality of films, and, value!!! I look forward to your newsletter and the films that run. Continue to do what you do and follow the feedback …. we want alternative films!! Balboa is almost one of the last of it's kind. I, my family and friends continue to support the Balboa. We come specifically to Balboa because of it's film selection.

Yours,

Lila

Gary,

The Balboa is a great Theater. Your programing is diverse and a refreshing alternative to the megaplex. We do want the Balboa to be an Art House Theater and that is what I consider it. I Think the Balboa is even better than an art house because you are more open to showing the mainstream films that are artistic that other art houses don't play them because they are mainstream. My wife and I live right on the corner of 38th and Balboa and the Balboa Theater is a great part of our community. Please keep doing exactly what you are doing. EVERYONE I KNOW LOVES THE BALBOA!

Thank You, you are doing a great job,

Steven and Emily

Hi Gary,

I just wanted to assure you that some of us really do appreciate your bookings of foreign films at the Balboa as well as the Hollywood movies that make sense for you. I have been interested in seeing Goodbye Lenin, but hadn't gone because Eternal Sunshine didn't appeal to me. Last weekend we went to see Harry Potter (at the Kabuki) - and will probably see it in a theater at least one more time. But I plan to go to the Balboa for your Goodbye Lenin/Bon Voyage double bill this weekend. I, for one, am definitely more of a Depardieu fan than a Carrey fan.

Thanks,

Marsha

We love the Balboa, and my husband and I always try to go there first and instead of the other cinemas.

We rarely make it to two films. One film is enough for us. I think in all our years we have only stayed for both films once. Plus, with this great weather I feel guilty spending so much time inside.

If you ever want to have a fun/fund raiser DO IT! People really support your endeavors.

Yours,

Terry

Wow, I can't believe someone would be short-sighted enough to complain about the film selections of the Balboa! My wife and I come to the Balboa from Bernal Heights because of the friendly people, the fantastic prices, and most of all, the wonderful choices of movies. In fact, we tend to exclusively choose the Balboa because of the fact that it does NOT typically run over-produced, over-hyped Hollywood films. Thank you for being such a wonderful establishment. I can't wait till the next time we visit!

Todd

Hi Gary,

You shouldn't pay any attention to one stupid caller. I for one am very disappointed that the Four Star has started showing first-run Hollywood films. Who needs it? Maybe they've found a way to make it pay for them; but I'd rather see those films in one of the big theaters downtown, or wait til they get to the Balboa.

Keep doing what you're doing.

Bob

Of course you have my vote on what you show already. And I'm glad you cleared that up (hopefully) for some others. One of the things that is important to me is that we benefit from your travels, knowledge and experience in selecting things we will enjoy. I've hesitated a few times about a listing…and then when I read the newsletter and see why you've chosen it, I go to it anyway…and I'm always pleased with the result. The last "foreign" film…which actually was made in New Jersey I guess…though it certainly had a foreign feel to it…I saw was Station Agent. Been busy lately. I would not have seen that on my own and I loved it. By the way, you've just given me another thing to say to friends etc. when I tell them I go to the Balboa.

This is not a nameless, faceless corporation. We have the advantage of having someone pick and choose for us so we can enlarge our appreciationscope/growth and all the pc things you can fill in the blanks…we have a personal reviewer and someone who really cares about what's on the screen…not just the $. By the way, another point you make is valuable…but for a different reason that you give…actually two. 1. I try to go during the week…less crowded etc. though attendance has picked up then overall. 2. I go early…like getting over there at 5ish. Shows usually start about 7. There is parking at that time and the area is a bit parking challenged in the evening when people get home from work. The eating establishments in the neighborhood have a wide selection of price ranges…the eggplant thing at Little Henry's is my favorite but I pick different ones…and if that's not in the budget…bring and brown bag and a good book to fill in the time.

Thank you for the work you do. You make us feel special in an age when marketing is aimed at the masses.

Hi Gary,

I'm sorry to hear that you got an anonymous phone message about not booking enough Hollywood movies but personally I love your programming and your effort in showing great films that get limited distribution and small marketing budget. Recently, I took friends who live in Redwood City to see TWILIGHT SAMURAI and we all thought the film was wonderful (a definite 2-3 hanky, even our husbands needed 2 hankies to wipe their tears toward the end of the film), enjoyed the concession food (hot dog, popcorn, soda, and coffee), and felt very lucky that we have a neighborhood theatre like the Balboa in these very difficult times for individually owned movie theatres.

Plus you have the friendliest and most charming bunch of workers at the Balboa which always adds to a most pleasant experience. So, many thank you's to you and Roger for all your hard work!

Gratefully,

Joan

Hey, Gary,

Great that BON VOYAGE is coming … and nice that you're holding onto GOODBYE LENIN …

Please pay NO attention to whatever psycho left that message … she obviously has NO idea what she's talking about …

L8r,

David

I love the Balboa and I love your choice of films. Keep up the good work and I'll make a point of coming in during sunny weather.

Lisa

Hi Gary,

Contrary to your strange anonymous caller, we LOVE foreign movies and just this past week saw Goodbye Lenin and the Triplets of Belleville, as well as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The latter is of course, not a foreign movie but would probably also unappreciated by the same woman. We LOVED all three movies!!!

You are doing a FANTASTIC job with the Balboa, so please do not get too disheartened. We tell our friends from other neighborhoods to come to our local theatre and often meet them there to enjoy good "foreign" movies together, as well as good American ones. As long as the movie is well acted, has a thought provoking script and can be enjoyed as art, we are happy. I doubt that we are in the minority in terms of Balboa regulars.

In fact just last week at the double feature of Goodbye Lenin and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, we met a great couple who were visiting the Balboa for the first time from the Haight/Ashbury area. We hit it off so well, that we returned two nights later to see Triplets of Belleville together. They loved both the theatre and the "foreign" movies and the four of us will be back!!

So, "keep up the good work", as they say in the classics. I also really enjoy your newsletter.

Best regards, Nanci Price Scoular and Andrew Scoular.

Dear Gary -

What language a movie is in is irrelevant. It is the cinematography (excuse the spelling) and the literary value of the plot that is all that counts. Anyone who thinks otherwise is uneducated and closed minded and their opinions aren't worth the time to waste a minute on. You are great and your movie choices are excellent. Please keep up the good work. We live in Novato and you are the only theater we like to go to. The Balboa is THE BEST theater in the entire bay area. We will try to go more often to give you support. Best regards. John, Johnny, Nancy and Marissa

Hi-

Just read the news about the lady who hates foreign films and I am so sorry to hear about how much greif she has caused you. You did such an admirable job in your explaination of how you work the movie choices. I am so happy that you are out there- Although I live across town, it is such a great thing to come to an old, authentic movie house- that I will make the trip when I can.

Your Balboa reminds me of the great nights I spent at the old York theater (which was in my neighborhood). And I am one of those "arty types" who just wanted to give you my personal thanks-

Jennifer

Gary,

As I read the comments made by the ignorant anon caller, I am totally reminded of how my students(immature) talk when they are balking about something they don't understand. Someone who calls but dares not leave a name probably does't ever calm down enough to sit at a computer to read the Balboa Newsletter. Hope you're not discouraged.

As for the selection of movies — while I could be one the "artsy" types and enjoy the foreign films(not too bizarre pls)BUT, I'm also the mom of pre-teens and am always looking for something good for them(but not too Hollywoodsy). I'll tell you what they liked — Rabbit-Proof Fence, Winged Migration (I had to bribe them, prep them and also promised to reward them they if they calm down enough to actually fall asleep). Don't remember anymore. I'd say, however, anything that is appropriate for kids, I'd always take them and would be confident they would either enjoy it or at least be educational.

I'll say this — No matter the weather this summer, anytime you show movies that are appropriate for kids, I'll make it a point to bring my kids and will also call up my students. If they go see it, I'll give them extra credit. OK??!!

Here's to a prosperous summer.

Best regards and God Bless,

Shancha

Dear Gary,

I'm sure you get a million emails a day but I had to say, I am horrified anyone would leave that kind of message (and not even leave contact info to follow up). Anyone boycotting the Balboa is only depriving themselves of fantastically enriching films. It is one of my favorite theaters in San Francisco and I would doubt very much there isn't a film buff in the area that doesn't treasure it as much as I do and some wonderful film-going memory that involved the Balboa. Mine is the day I was running some errands nearby and decided to slip into see School of Rock, it was raining a bit (and the movie is so endearing) that the place was entirely packed with old rockers and young kids laughing and cheering throughout. In fact, I was just at the Balboa earlier today (seeing Eternal Sunshine for the 3rd time & Goodbye Lenin) and the previews for the upcoming films all seemed very exciting.

As for for the summer suckage from the theaters, perhaps reaching out to the Goth or other Sun-avoiding communities might help, just a thought! Keep the lovelines flowing.

Dear Gary,

Just read your most recent email.

I say, You can't please everyone, so you just gotta please yourself.

You know the song.

Plus, selfishly, I love your programming. I've lived in the 'hood for 8 years and you've got me going to the Balboa again. And I tell my friends.

All the best,

Not anonymously,

Jack

Dear Gary-

Don't change!!!!!! I love your theater and the movies you choose. That person who wrote you is nuts. I have been going to the Balboa regularly for 20 years and hope to be going 20 years from now.

Your theater and movie selection is great.

Yours,

Robin

Dear Gary,

I hope you will send out the S.O.S. if the theatre comes close to closing. I will be leaving San Francisco for an extended while, and one of the biggest things I will miss will be the Balboa. I would be sad to see it close, and sadder still to not receive your emails. I have enjoyed your missives from the Cannes Festival and enjoy your writeups of cinematic news in this area.

I think you could raise the rates and people would still come. I think people like me always are looking for a more personal experience, and we go out of our way to avoid impersonal experiences like the Metreon and other cineplex atrocities.

And your emails have been causative!

Because of you, I went to hear the Kaufmans in San Raphael, and sat in a room with some people who manage to make beautiful, artful, meaningful films where there are no guns, and nothing blows up.

Because of you, I went to see Milos Forman at the Castro, and listened to him talk.

You have restored my faith in passion.

I grew up in Massachusetts, on Cape Cod in the Summer, and in Falmouth there was this guy who started a theatre way out in a field in North Falmouth across from a pig farm, and he used to show movies and gave free popcorn and coffee. He loved movies. In that theatre I saw "Harold and Maude", "The Producers" and many other movies. My sister and I would put in requests…"The Children of Paradise" and others. He wrote them down and showed them. Pretty soon there was a pretty big following of the Nickelodeon Theatre in Falmouth, then he opened another theatre, and another and another. It's a big chain now, but I remember him climbing down from the projection booth, and the way he loved what he was doing.

You remind me of him.

Thanks for the Balboa, and keep it up!

Nancy

Dear Gary,

The woman's call and threats do not represent your patrons feelings. So disregard her and treat it as a crank call of dubious legitimacy.

In case you need a boost, in our estimation, you are doing a first rate job of choosing films of the highest quality. Personally, I wish you could find more foreign films — and not less — to book into your theater. Keep up the good work.

Best wishes, Cy

Don't take the negativity personally, Gary. As a programmer myself (of theater) I can tell you there is always going to be the disgruntled person who feels good about dumping a load in your voicemail. But the rest of the feedback is in the form of the people who are showing up, e-mailing, and spreading the news of your good work there. It is hard not to let the negative voice drown out the compliments but don't apologize for what you've accomplished there. It is hard work and many people are very happy you do it so well.

Gary,

I know you will get many emails in support, as a response to your latest note about blockbusters vs art films. But can't resist saying the obvious- We count on you bringing a wonderful variety of films that we would otherwise never see. So many of these films from the indies and around the world have literally enriched our lives, and of course we also enjoy the mainstream bargains (ala Monsters). We look forward to each new offering and rarely miss a title (although Dale will pass on Kill Bill).

Thanks for all!

Dale and Bert

Dear Gary, I love the Balboa, it is a GREAT neighborhood theater and it is where I see most of my movies. Overall, I think you have a great selection and variety of films, enough to satisfy even the most finiky movie-goer. The prices are great, the snacks are innovative, and you have the friendliest and most efficient staff of any SF theater. Keep up the good work! Mary

I just wanted to let you know that I go to the Balboa a lot to watch movies and I love going there. How can I not? With $5 bargain matinee and a double-feature and snacks I can afford?…it would be hard not to =). I don't like going to the big multiplex movie theatres because they are too crowded and have expensive snacks. I don't like watching the box-office movies until they come out on DVD anyway. I love watching indie and foreign films at the Balboa. I'm glad it exists =D.

Loyal fan of the Balboa

Nenita E.

Hey Gary,

I just wanted to respond to the criticism you recently received. Two years ago, I wouldn't venture much further west than Arguello street. Then a coworker told me about what you were doing at the Balboa, and since my first visit I have gone out of my way to see the movies you show. It is a great mix of Hollywood, foreign, Independent, and documentaries that works perfectly in this city. I sometimes find myself enjoying a movie that I watch only because it is a double with something that I wanted to see.

If it weren't for you double features, I might have missed out on some incredible movies. And, like most the other Balboa fans, I want to see the occasional Hollywood action flick, like "Pirates of the Caribbean" or "Master and Commander" without having to patronize the Metreon or AMC 1000 Van Ness teen centers, oops, multiplexes.

Thank you, and your staff, for your continued commitment to good (and sometimes fun or silly) cinema! Keep up the great work.

Rick

To all at the Balboa,

I just read about the unfortunate caller and her threat of a boycott.

It is truly awful, and please do not take in her anger. She's "havin' a bad day", to quote Sissy Spacek in "Places in the Heart". Maybe, who knows, you allowed her to not harm herself by your convenient empty phone…?! One hopes.

I love the Balboa, and tell everyone I know about it, even folks in Oroville, California. It's true. They will attend, too, I will see to that! I am so impressed at your letting us movie lovers into the back scene of booking, and all that it takes to run a theatre. It is enriching, and enjoyable. I love having the list of films you are angling for, I hold off seeing anything anywhere else to give you my business. And encourage others as well.

You have my respect, which is rare for me to give a business! Please keep on, as I know you will, and send our unfortunate female friend some compassion. Just don't take it personally, you are doing a FINE job.

Many thanks for all you do. Zoe , a frequent and happy customer.

Chris,

Think of it this way…..our price is a bargain for one movie and the 2nd feature is a free bonus. So you can see TWLILIGHT SAMURAI and hang around to see if maybe you like KILL BILL 2 which is very good.

I also hope you'll try some movies you've never heard of and get a great surprise.

Gary

I love the Balboa. I generally much prefer Landmark theaters over the AMC variety, largely because of the movies which play there, but also because of the treatment of customers. Your theater is much like the Landmark theaters in that respect. I generally prefer foreign or documentary films over the blockbusters, but I like some of almost every genre, and variety is definitely a plus. Keep up the good work. The remodeling is going very well too.

Dear Gary, I go to the Balboa because you DON'T show Hollywood movies! Please stick to the Independent and documentaries. Sometimes you guys do show Hollywood films, but thankfully only for a week. If the Balboa did start showing Hollywood films I would go elsewhere. J

Gary,

I can honestly say that I've NEVER seen a bad movie at the Balboa. I'm a very harsh movie critic, so that says a lot.

I suspect that I come to the Balboa for the same reason most others do: the films are superb, and the price: unbeatable.

Don't let that crazy lady get you down. Boycott the Balboa? Is she serious? How sad and pathetic. Pity her.

Of all the things to protest, she chose… uh… the Balboa Theatre? Jeeeez.

Chin up. You're doing just fine, and are, hands-down, my favorite movie house.

Cheers.

Dimitri

I think the Balboa is priceless and you cannot please em all…

keep up the good work. i like your type films and only wish you were closer.

thanks.

Dear Gary,

You are doing a wonderful job. Please ignore the odd nutbag who calls to vent a (negative) passing thought; she is not representative of your audience (as your newsletter points out) and doesn't deserve your attention. Only a nutcase with too much time on her hands would leave a rude and pointless message like the one you describe.

Even if she is organizing some sort of wacky "boycott," it is surely offset by the wonderful word-of-mouth that you get from 99% of your audience.

If I ever run into a lot of money, you can be sure I'll donate part of it to the Balboa.

Yours sincerely,

Courtney

We love your programming and trek far across town from the Mission to see your movies!

Linda

Thanks for your explanation of your booking process. I never knew how small theaters fared in the marketplace.

I wish you luck. I drive up from San Mateo as often as I can. I don't see many movies and I try to make them the effort to see them at your theater.

I lived in SF growing up and loved the Surf. So you have brought to life a fine theater and I hope to support you for many years.

People who leave messages and run don't seem to have much conviction, so they may or may not be worthy of worry.

Congratulations on the ad for VW with the Balboa in the background. I hope you got some commission from VW. I saved it and will send it along in the very unlikely chance that you hadn't seen it. Or you may want another copy for your scrap books!

A happy customer who appreciates your booking goals.

Dildar

Gary Meyer, you rock, and the Balboa Theater rocks.

I will remember not to get too much sun and top my day off with a delicious film more often.

Thanks to you and your team for making the Outer Richmond and all of San Francisco proud. See you soon!

Sincerely,

Meredith

Hey Gary,

There's always going to be a whiner. It is to your credit that you listen, but one bad apple doesn't spoil the rest of us who love the Balboa and appreciate the movies you show at prices that are great. True, I don't love ALL the movies you show, but you tend to carry interesting movies more often than other theaters and there's a lot of crap out there at the megaplex. Keep up the good work.

Whiners. Ugh!

Susan

Keep up the good work. Dont listen to that chauvinist yahoo Her kind of prejudice got us into Iraq.

Sorry to hear you got that really mean note from an unhappy customer. I never write, but to reassure you there are many more of us than her who really appreciate you and what you provide the SF community, I'm writing now. I drive all the way from out by SF city college where I live, clear on the other side of town, to see movies at the Balboa whenever I can… It's my favorite SF theatre and I appreciate not only the great movies and great value, but also the email newsletter I get here each week, and the whole general good spirit of You, who cares about good film and good community, intelligently and thoughtfully… So bravo! and thanks, gayle

Dear Balboa,

Whatever nameless person wrote the referenced email does not speak for the rest of us. You are my favorite theater. Whenever I want to see a film I check the Balboa first because I know I'll like almost anything you screen.

Keep up the good programming.

Ann

I want you to know that I only go to the Balboa Cinema. I love the films you choose and often on Sundays I arrive at noon not even knowing what films are playing but knowing I will like them all as I have always liked them all. Please keep picking and choosing as you are doing. If I want to see a Hollywood Blockbuster there are a dozen plus cinemas in SF I can go to.

Dorothy

Please keep up the good work and do not change your programming for one coocoo. My wife and I attend the Bal often, mostly during the daytime since we are both retired, and think your shows are great. Every time we go there are many patrons enjoying your shows just as we are. If you closed we all would be very disappointed. Sincerely, Warren and Olga

Well said Gary. I hope the woman who called and left the stupid message lives in Walnut Creek. Please tell her to stay there. She probably gets headaches reading subtitles anyway…!

We love your movies just the way they are. Keep on doing what you are doing. We are happy to see the double bills of the well received but less hyped films.

pat

Don't change a thing about the Balboa!!! We love your programming, your staff, and your prices. We come to your theatre, rain or shine, winter or summer, at least twice a month, if not more. Just keep doing what you're doing and we'll be devoted fans for life.

Warmest regards,

Diane and Frank

P.S. I enjoy your newsletters, too, and I save them until the next one comes out so I can refer to the play times and reviews. You provide a great service and I'm proud to be a part of the Balboa community. Keep up the great work!

Hello Gary. I am a native San Franciscan and a long time fan of the Balboa Theatre and of your policy in regard to the movies you choose. I also appreciate the time and effort you put in when trying to satisfy your audience. There is a variety of taste with so many people to try and please. I enjoy watching the majority of movies you select. After reading about the person who called you to complain, I felt compelled to send you this e-mail. I would be very surprised if the majority of people that go to the Balboa Theatre wouldn't agree with me. There is an excellent mix of commercial, independent and foreign films and some films that I may not have heard of, which become a positive learning experience Isn't that the beauty and art of film? Thank you for your hard work and most of all your contribution to the community.

Sincerely,

Bill

I just wanted you to know that I thought the pairing of "Twilight Samurai" and "Kill Bill 2" was excellent. Knowing that I wanted to catch that double bill, I soaked up the sun and wonderful weather on Saturday, so that I wouldn't feel so bad about going "into the dark" at the Balboa on Sunday. I live in the Nob Hill neighborhood and I don't have a car, so it can take me almost an hour to get out to the Balboa by bus, but the $5.00 matinee double feature, the great films, and tasty popcorn toppings, all make it worth while. "Twilight Samurai" is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time and I'd highly recommend it to anyone. I saw "Kill Bill 1" at the Balboa and I like Quentin Tarantino's films, so I knew that I'd enjoy that one.

Anyway, thanks for all of your hard work on behalf of us movie-goers.

Charlene

Gary: Ignore the essentially minority (lone wolf howling at the moon) sentiments re the showing of 'foreign' or 'art' films at the Balboa. I'm sure even a casual bit of survey research will indicate that your policy of playing high quality movies (from far and wide) is roundly supported by most of your supporters. Hmm, maybe if someone were to throw a bone at that wolf (?)… she might be momentarily distracted, yes? Benjamin

Sorry to hear that some angry person made an ingorant phone call but be assured that the rest of us greatly appreciate what a customer friendly operation you are trying to run.

I admit that I have not gone to the Balboa in a while simply because I am waiting for a double feature. I'd love to see Twilight Samurai but don't want to see Kill Bill Vol. 2.

Fortunately, you were kind enough to donate free passes to your theater to the graduating cinema students of SFSU. I thank you very much for that since we all know that going to the movies is getting too expensive even for students.

The only smaller films I can think of that are coming out soon that I would love to see are Zatoichi and the Director's cut of Donnie Darko (probably not as a pair as they have different audiences).

-Chris
